Chapter 6 – The Blood They Tried to Erase

No one spoke.
The grandfather clock in the Montoya library ticked loudly enough to sound like a countdown.
I stared at the faded birth certificate until the letters blurred together.
Gabriel Montoya.
Alejandro's father.
The man whose portrait still hung above the fireplace downstairs.
The man newspapers had once called the philanthropist who transformed South Texas.
The same man whose hidden ledger labeled me:
Potential liability. Monitor continuously.
My hands began to shake.
"This..."
I swallowed hard.
"This has to be wrong."
Detective Brooks didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she carefully slipped the document into an evidence sleeve.
"We don't know if it's genuine."
"But we also can't assume it's fake."
Alejandro leaned both hands against the conference table.
"My father never mentioned another child."
Viviana let out a bitter laugh.
"My father also never mentioned bribing judges."
No one argued with her.
The sun was beginning to rise beyond the tall windows.
Gray light crept across the hardwood floor.
It had been the longest night of my life.
Yet somehow...
It still wasn't over.
Another detective entered carrying a sealed evidence box.
"We finished processing Daniel Cross's apartment."
Brooks looked up.
"Anything useful?"
The detective nodded once.
"We recovered a laptop."
"And?"
"It was wiped."
Alejandro sighed.
"So nothing."
"Not exactly."
The detective smiled faintly.
"Our cyber team recovered fragments."
He plugged the laptop into a monitor.
A list of deleted folders appeared.
One folder immediately caught everyone's attention.
PROJECT GARDEN
Another.
ARACELI – SURVEILLANCE
My stomach dropped.
Brooks opened the second folder.
Thousands of files appeared.
Photographs.
Bank records.
Employment applications.
Medical forms.
Copies of my driver's license.
Every apartment I had rented during the last nine years.
Every job.
Every move.
Every address.
Alejandro stared in disbelief.
"They followed you..."
"For almost a decade."
I whispered,
"I thought I kept disappearing."
Brooks looked at me sadly.
"You disappeared from everyone except them."
One photograph made my blood run cold.
It showed me sitting outside a public elementary school in El Paso.
Lupita was beside me eating ice cream.
The picture had been taken from across the street.
Neither of us had noticed.
Another photograph.
Moncho playing soccer.
Another.
Rachid boarding a school bus.
Someone had documented every child I loved.
Not because they cared.
Because they knew they were leverage.
Alejandro suddenly slammed his fist onto the table.
Hard enough to make the coffee cups jump.
"I swear to God..."
His voice shook with controlled rage.
"I will destroy every single person involved."
Brooks remained calm.
"You'll do it through the law."
He looked at her.
"They've spent years terrorizing innocent people."
"I know."
"And rage is exactly what they're hoping for."
She paused.
"We don't make their mistakes."
Viviana quietly walked toward the window.
"I used to worship my father."
Her reflection stared back at her.
"I gave speeches about his charity."
"I accepted awards in his name."
She wiped away silent tears.
"I built my entire identity around a lie."
Alejandro crossed the room.
"This isn't your fault."
She looked at him.
"Isn't it?"
"I defended him every time someone questioned his business."
She laughed bitterly.
"I called people jealous."
"I called them bitter."
"I helped protect a monster."
Brooks interrupted gently.
"People raised inside manipulation usually don't recognize it."
Viviana nodded.
"Neither did Araceli."
Neither did Alejandro.
Neither did I.
Control never introduces itself honestly.
Just after eight that morning...
The forensic lab finally called.
Brooks answered on speaker.
"We finished DNA analysis."
Everyone straightened.
"What did you find?"
The technician hesitated.
"The blood found inside the hidden basement room..."
Alejandro frowned.
"What basement?"
The detective looked surprised.
"You didn't know?"
Everyone turned toward Brooks.
She nodded.
"We found a concealed room beneath your father's wine cellar."
Alejandro's face emptied.
"There was no basement."
"There is now."
The technician continued.
"The blood samples belong to multiple individuals."
Silence.
"How many?"
"We've identified seven so far."
My heart pounded.
"Were they..."
Brooks asked carefully.
"Alive?"
"We don't know."
Another pause.
"But one sample matches someone already in the national missing persons database."
The name appeared on the screen.
Isabella Torres.
Missing.
Age nineteen.
Disappeared fourteen years earlier.
Viviana covered her mouth.
"I remember her."
Alejandro turned.
"Who was she?"
"A volunteer."
"She worked at Father's charity gala."
Her voice cracked.
"She vanished two weeks later."
The room fell silent again.
This investigation had stopped being about one corrupt businessman.
It had become something much larger.
Much darker.
Around noon...
A black sedan quietly entered the estate gates.
Detectives immediately surrounded it.
An elderly priest stepped out.
Father Miguel.
Nearly eighty years old.
Walking slowly with a cane.
He asked only one question.
"Is Alejandro here?"
Brooks searched him quickly before allowing him inside.
The old priest removed his hat.
"I buried Gabriel Montoya."
Alejandro nodded cautiously.
"I know."
Father Miguel looked directly at him.
"No."
"You buried the man everyone believed he was."
"I buried someone else entirely."
He reached into his coat.
Pulled out another sealed envelope.
"I promised never to open this."
"But Gabriel visited me two days before he died."
"He confessed."
The room became perfectly still.
"He told me that one child..."
Father Miguel looked toward me.
"...was never supposed to survive."
No one breathed.
"He ordered someone to make sure the mother disappeared."
I felt my knees weaken.
"The mother..."
I whispered.
"My mother?"
Father Miguel nodded slowly.
"She ran before his men found her."
"She changed your name."
"She erased every document she could."
"She spent the rest of her life hiding you."
Tears streamed down my face.
My mother had never abandoned me.
She had been protecting me.
Every move.
Every lie.
Every sacrifice.
Suddenly...
Everything made sense.
Alejandro sat down heavily.
"So all these years..."
Father Miguel finished quietly.
"Gabriel believed the secret had died."
"But after your marriage..."
He looked toward me.
"Someone discovered Araceli was still alive."
"And they resumed the hunt."
Brooks suddenly received another urgent call.
She answered immediately.
Her expression changed.
"What?"
She listened for nearly thirty seconds.
Then slowly lowered the phone.
"We found Víctor Mena."
Everyone stood.
"Alive?"
Brooks nodded.
"He was trying to cross into Mexico."
Alejandro exhaled sharply.
"Good."
"He'll finally answer questions."
Brooks looked directly at him.
"He already asked for one person."
"Who?"
She turned toward me.
"He refuses to speak..."
"...unless Araceli is in the room."
For a long moment...
No one said anything.
Because everyone understood.
The man who had haunted my nightmares since I was sixteen...
Was finally ready to talk.
May you like
The only question left was why.
