Chapter 3 – The Search Warrant

The first knock had sounded ordinary.

The second carried authority.

The third changed everything.

Alejandro folded the manila envelope shut before anyone else entered the bedroom. His face no longer carried the shock of a groom discovering his bride's hidden scars.

Now it carried something colder.

Resolve.

The house manager stood frozen in the doorway.

"There are four detectives downstairs, sir."

"They have county investigators with them."

"And..."

He hesitated.

"They're asking specifically for your father's office."

Viviana closed her eyes.

"So it begins."

Alejandro reached for my hand.

"Stay with me."

I looked down at the wedding dress pooled around my feet.

"I should get dressed."

He gently shook his head.

"No."

"For years you've hidden because of what someone else did to you."

He picked up the ivory silk robe hanging behind the bedroom door and wrapped it carefully around my shoulders.

"You have nothing to be ashamed of."

For the first time since I had entered the room that evening...

I believed him.

Downstairs, the grand foyer was silent.

The marble floors reflected the crystal chandelier overhead.

Fresh white roses still decorated the staircase from the wedding reception.

Their sweet fragrance mixed strangely with the scent of rain drifting in through the open front door.

Standing beneath the chandelier were four detectives.

A woman in a navy suit stepped forward.

"Mr. Montoya?"

Alejandro nodded.

"I'm Detective Helen Brooks with the Financial Crimes and Public Integrity Task Force."

She held up official documents.

"We have a warrant to search this property."

Alejandro didn't even glance at the papers.

"You'll have full cooperation."

The detective looked surprised.

"Thank you."

Then her eyes landed on me.

For a brief moment she looked confused.

The bridal robe.

The veil still pinned in my hair.

Bare feet.

Red eyes.

She immediately understood.

"I'm sorry to disturb your wedding night."

Alejandro answered quietly.

"I don't believe we have a wedding night anymore."

Detectives spread throughout the mansion.

One team headed toward Ricardo Montoya's private office.

Another photographed safes, filing cabinets, and computers.

The silence inside the estate felt heavier than any shouting.

Forty minutes later...

A detective called from upstairs.

"Detective Brooks!"

"You need to see this."

Everyone gathered inside Ricardo's office.

The room smelled of leather, expensive cigars, and old paper.

One wall contained framed awards.

Another displayed photographs with senators, judges, and governors.

Power.

Influence.

Respectability.

The perfect disguise.

A hidden compartment had been discovered behind the bookshelf.

Inside were dozens of identical manila folders.

Every one carried a different name.

Different families.

Different dates.

Different towns.

Detective Brooks slowly removed one file.

Then another.

Then another.

Her expression hardened with every page.

"What are these?"

Viviana answered before anyone else could.

"My father's insurance policies."

Brooks frowned.

"Insurance?"

"Not legal insurance."

Viviana swallowed.

"People."

Each folder documented someone who could damage Ricardo Montoya's business empire.

Whistleblowers.

Former employees.

Business rivals.

Women who had filed complaints.

Families who refused to sell land.

Private investigators had collected everything.

Medical histories.

Financial records.

Photographs.

Weaknesses.

Secrets.

Anything that could be used.

Then Detective Brooks found another familiar name.

ARACELI SALGADO

My entire body went cold.

She carefully opened the folder.

Unlike the one Viviana had brought upstairs...

This one contained far more.

Dozens of surveillance photographs.

Copies of my school records.

Medical files.

Church attendance.

Employment applications.

Even letters I had mailed to my siblings.

Nothing had been private.

Not for years.

I stared silently at the photographs.

One showed me waiting for a city bus.

Another showed me buying asthma medicine for Moncho.

Another captured Lupita hugging me outside her elementary school.

Someone had followed me.

Watched me.

Documented my life.

Without my knowledge.

For almost a decade.

Alejandro stood beside me.

His jaw tightened.

"Who ordered this?"

Detective Brooks continued searching.

Then she found invoices.

Private security firms.

Investigation companies.

Consultants.

Every payment approved personally by Ricardo Montoya.

At the bottom of the file lay a single handwritten note.

The detective carefully unfolded it.

She read silently.

Then looked at me.

"I'm sorry."

She handed it to Alejandro instead.

His face changed instantly.

I reached for the paper.

The handwriting was sharp.

Confident.

My father had written only four sentences.

Keep her scared.

Fear keeps people predictable.

If she ever talks...

Nobody will believe a woman with rumors attached to her.

My knees nearly gave way.

The rumors.

Three children.

Three fathers.

Loose morals.

Shame.

Every whisper inside the estate.

Every sideways glance.

Every smirk from wealthy guests.

Had never happened naturally.

Someone had planted them.

Carefully.

Patiently.

Deliberately.

Viviana covered her mouth.

"I only started repeating them."

"They already existed."

Detective Brooks nodded.

"They were manufactured."

She pointed toward another stack of documents.

"Your father paid investigators to spread them."

Alejandro stared at the pages.

"He destroyed her reputation..."

"So nobody would listen if she ever spoke."

For years...

I had blamed strangers.

I had blamed gossip.

I had blamed myself.

Now I discovered something infinitely crueler.

The rumors had been designed.

The detective turned another page.

"There are payments here to local newspapers."

Another.

"Anonymous online accounts."

Another.

"Employment agencies."

She looked directly at me.

"They blacklisted you."

"Every job application you lost..."

"Every apartment rental denied..."

"Every recommendation withdrawn..."

Her voice softened.

"It wasn't because of you."

I began crying.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Quiet tears.

The kind that come when you suddenly realize your entire life has been shaped by someone else's lies.

Alejandro gently pulled me against him.

"You hear me?"

I nodded weakly.

"It wasn't you."

He repeated it.

"It was never you."

For years...

Nobody had ever said those words.

Just after midnight another detective entered carrying a locked metal cash box.

"We found this beneath the floor."

Inside were passports.

Cash.

USB drives.

And one sealed envelope.

Written across the front:

Only if Alejandro learns the truth.

The room became perfectly silent.

Alejandro slowly broke the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter from his father.

He read only the first paragraph before his hands started shaking.

Then he looked at Detective Brooks.

"My father knew someone was investigating him."

Brooks frowned.

"What else?"

Alejandro swallowed hard.

"He says..."

"He always expected Araceli to survive."

Everyone stared.

"He believed..."

Alejandro could barely finish the sentence.

"...that one day she would come looking for justice."

The detective quietly asked,

"Is there more?"

Alejandro slowly turned to the second page.

His face lost every trace of color.

Because taped to the final page...

Was a recent photograph.

Taken only six days earlier.

It showed me leaving the florist before my wedding.

Standing across the street...

Watching me...

Was a man I recognized instantly.

The same man who had beaten my father for money.

The same man who disappeared years ago.

The man I believed was dead.

He wasn't.

And according to the date stamped on the photograph...

May you like

Someone had sent him to watch me again.
