Chapter 3: Lily's Courage

Alyssa regained consciousness four days later.

The first thing she asked was:

"Where's Lily?"

When they reunited in the hospital, there wasn't a dry eye in the room.

Lily climbed into her mother's bed and refused to let go.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

Alyssa kissed her forehead.

"You saved us."

Because she had.

Without that phone call, nobody would have known anything was wrong.

Nathan was arrested at a bus station in Missouri less than twenty-four hours after the rescue.

When confronted with the evidence, he finally confessed.

He couldn't accept the divorce.

He wanted Lily for himself.

And he believed if Alyssa disappeared long enough, nobody would question the new custody paperwork.

The jury didn't believe his excuses.

He was convicted of kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, fraud, and attempted custodial interference.

He received a lengthy prison sentence.

One year later, life looked very different.

Alyssa returned to nursing.

Lily was back in school.

And every Friday night they came to my house for dinner.

One evening Lily sat beside me on the porch swing.

"Grandma?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

She looked up at the stars.

"Do you think I was brave?"

Tears filled my eyes.

I remembered the frightened little voice on the phone.

The courage it took to call for help.

The life that call had saved.

I wrapped my arm around her shoulders.

"I think," I said softly, "you're the bravest person I've ever known."

She smiled.

And for the first time since that terrifying night, the fear finally loosened its grip on our family.

Because sometimes heroes don't wear uniforms.

Sometimes they're eight-year-old girls who make one phone call at exactly the right moment.

And that call changes everything.

The End.
