Chapter 2: The Secret Storage Unit

Detectives tracked Nathan's movements through traffic cameras and credit card records.

At first everything seemed normal.

Then they found something strange.

Nathan had rented a storage unit on the edge of town six months earlier.

A unit he visited almost every day.

Police obtained a warrant.

I sat at the station waiting for answers when Detective Sarah Collins entered the room.

Her expression told me everything.

They had found something.

"Mrs. Ward," she said gently, "we located your granddaughter."

I burst into tears.

"She's alive?"

Sarah nodded.

"Yes."

Relief hit me so hard I could barely breathe.

But Sarah wasn't smiling.

"Where's Alyssa?" I asked.

The detective looked down.

"We haven't found her yet."

The storage unit contained a hidden living space.

A mattress.

Children's toys.

Food supplies.

Clothes.

And Lily.

Terrified.

Confused.

Alive.

When investigators asked what happened, she began crying.

"Daddy said Mommy was sick."

"Did you see your mother?"

Lily nodded.

"She was sleeping."

The room fell silent.

"Where?"

Lily pointed toward another section of the storage facility.

Police immediately searched every nearby unit.

Then one officer shouted.

"We've got something."

They found Alyssa locked inside a neighboring unit.

Unconscious.

Barely breathing.

But alive.

A paramedic later confirmed she had been heavily sedated.

For nearly three days.

Nathan had drugged her, convinced Lily that her mother was ill, and hidden them both while preparing to leave the state.

But detectives soon uncovered an even darker truth.

Nathan had forged custody documents.

Sold his house.

Closed his bank accounts.

He wasn't planning a visit.

He was planning a permanent disappearance.

And he had nearly succeeded.
