Chapter 6 - The Standoff in the Dark

For three agonizing seconds, time seemed to freeze entirely inside the master guest suite.
Victoria didn't look panicked. She didn't look surprised. She looked like a general who had just watched her enemy walk willingly into a carefully prepared minefield.
“Well, well,” Victoria purred, taking a slow sip of her champagne as she leaned casually against the doorframe. “I wondered where my favorite little housekeeper had wandered off to. And it looks like she brought a stray dog along with her.”
Julian slammed the laptop screen halfway down, his hand dropping instinctively toward a heavy portable hard drive in his pocket as he stepped protectively in front of Elena. “Victoria Sinclair, I presume? Julian Vance with The Boston Chronicle. Your little house of cards just collapsed. The federal prosecutor already has a mirrored copy of everything on this drive.”
Victoria let out a light, musical laugh—a chilling sound that echoed off the high ceilings.
“Mr. Vance,” she said, tilting her head with mock admiration. “I’ve read your little articles. You’re quite the crusader. But you seem to be laboring under a fundamental misconception.”
She stepped fully into the room, and as she did, three heavy-set men in dark security suits emerged from the shadows of the hallway behind her, blocking the exit entirely.
“You think because you uploaded a few files to a cloud server, anyone is going to care?” Victoria continued, her voice hardening into pure glass. “My family owns the media board, the district attorney’s office, and half the federal judges in this state. By the time morning comes, any article you publish will be labeled as a malicious, hacked cyber-attack by a disgraced journalist trying to extort a prominent family.”
Julian’s jaw tightened. He glanced at the laptop screen.
Upload progress: 98%... 99%...
“Just two more seconds,” Julian muttered under his breath.
Victoria saw his eyes shift toward the laptop. Her smile vanished instantly.
“Take the computer,” she commanded sharply to her security guards. “And break his hands.”
Two of the massive guards lunged forward like freight trains.
Before Julian could react, Elena acted with a desperate, ferocious bravery born of a mother protecting her child. She grabbed a heavy, solid-brass decorative candlestick from the bedside table and swung it with all her might, smashing it directly into the side of the nearest guard’s knee with a sickening crunch.
The guard roared in pain, collapsing sideways into a mahogany side table and crashing to the floor, taking the second guard down with him in a tangle of limbs.
“Run!” Elena screamed, grabbing Julian’s arm.
“The upload is at 100%!” Julian shouted, ripping the flash drive out of the USB port and slamming the laptop shut as the third guard lunged toward them.
They bolted past Victoria toward the open bathroom door connecting to the adjoining suite, but Victoria was faster than she looked. She lunged forward, grabbing a heavy brass table lamp and hurling it directly at Elena’s back.
The heavy base struck Elena squarely between the shoulder blades, sending her sprawling hard onto the polished wood floor with a sharp cry of pain.
“Elena!” Julian yelled, turning back to help her up just as the third security guard tackled him from behind, pinning him to the floor.
Victoria walked slowly over to where Elena lay coughing on the floor, standing over her with a look of pure, unadulterated venom. She raised her high-heeled shoe, pressing the sharp heel down cruelly against the back of Elena’s hand.
“You really thought you could win, didn't you, you pathetic little peasant?” Victoria whispered, leaning down close. “You and your little girl are going to disappear so cleanly that no one will ever even remember your names.”

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the master suite burst open with a deafening bang that rattled the crystal chandelier overhead.
“Victoria Sinclair! Federal Marshals! Step away from them right now!”
