Chapter 5 - The Gala and the Ghost

Friday evening arrived with the oppressive weight of a summer storm brooding over the Boston skyline.

The Blackwood estate was a dazzling spectacle of wealth and excess. Floodlights illuminated the sprawling lawn, classical string quartets played softly from the glass-enclosed pavilion, and hundreds of high-society guests in designer tuxedos and glittering jewels mingled beneath white silk marquees.

Inside the mansion, however, the atmosphere was suffocating.

Elena moved through the grand hallways like a ghost in her black-and-white uniform, carrying a silver tray filled with champagne flutes. Her palms were slick with nervous sweat, and every muscle in her body was coiled as tight as a spring.

Across the ballroom, she spotted Ethan Blackwood standing beside Victoria. Ethan looked terribly pale, swaying slightly as he shook hands with a city councilman, his speech slurred just enough for Elena to notice. Victoria was standing right beside him, smiling radiantly, holding a fresh crystal glass filled with sparkling water that she pressed gently into his hand.

She’s giving him another dose right in front of everyone, Elena thought with a shudder of pure revulsion.

She checked her pocket watch. 7:55 PM.

Setting her tray down on a nearby side table, Elena slipped away from the edge of the ballroom, melting into the shadows of the darkened service corridor. The air here was cool, smelling of old stone and floor wax. She navigated the maze of back hallways until she reached the heavy metal service loading dock door at the rear of the mansion.

She checked her watch again. 8:00 PM on the dot.

She reached for the heavy iron push-bar of the loading door and pressed it outward into the rainy night.

A figure in a dark trench coat slipped through the opening instantly, stepping out of the rain and into the corridor. It was Julian Vance. He looked older and tougher than his professional headshot suggested, with sharp graying temples, piercing dark eyes, and a weathered trench coat damp from the drizzle.

“You made it,” Elena whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.

“Traffic was a nightmare,” Julian murmured, pulling back his coat to reveal a small laptop bag slung across his chest. “Do you have the drive, or do we need to go up to the guest suite?”

“We have to go up,” Elena said urgently. “Victoria keeps the master guest suite locked with a biometric deadbolt, but I have the master service override key in the housekeeping office. It takes two minutes.”

“Lead the way,” Julian nodded, his expression grim and resolute.

They moved swiftly and silently through the back stairs, avoiding the glittering crowds in the main reception rooms. Every creak of the old wooden steps sounded like a gunshot in the quiet stairwell, but fortune favored them—the staff quarters and upper hallways were completely deserted, everyone drawn downstairs by the glamour of the pre-wedding gala.

They reached the door of the master guest suite.

Elena slid the master service card into the side electronic slot. With a soft, mechanical click, the green indicator light flashed. She pushed the door open, slipping inside the dark, luxurious bedroom, followed closely by Julian.

“Quickly,” Elena whispered, hurrying toward the enormous four-poster bed. She reached for the champagne-colored satin pillow, unzipped the hidden seam, and pulled out the tiny black flash drive, handing it immediately to the journalist.

Julian pulled a compact, encrypted card reader from his jacket, plugged the flash drive into his laptop, and popped open the screen. A dim blue light illuminated his face as lines of code, hidden partition files, and encrypted database logs began scrolling down the monitor at blinding speed.

Julian’s eyes widened as he scanned the data.

“My God,” he whispered, his voice trembling slightly. “It’s all here. Every financial transfer, every medical record, every forged signature transferring the Blackwood trust into Victoria’s offshore shell corporations. And look at this...” He pointed to a video file embedded in a hidden folder. “Security camera footage from the hallway outside Charles Blackwood’s bedroom the night he died. It’s Victoria tampering with his IV drip.”

Elena covered her mouth with her hands, tears welling in her eyes. “We have it. We finally have it.”

“We have enough to put her away for the rest of her natural life,” Julian said, hitting a few keys to initiate a high-speed encrypted upload to his newspaper’s secure cloud server. “The files are syncing now. Once this upload hits 100%, a mirrored copy goes straight to the federal prosecutor’s office and the Associated Press.”

Progress bar: 78%... 84%... 91%...

Suddenly, a sharp, metallic sound echoed through the bedroom.

Click.

The heavy oak door of the suite swung wide open, flooding the dark room with bright hallway light.

There, standing in the doorway with a glass of champagne in her hand and a murderous smile playing across her lips, stood Victoria Sinclair.
