Chapter 3: The Wedding That Never Went According to Plan

The next afternoon, every seat beneath the flower-covered arbor was filled.

Guests whispered about the missing dress.

I appeared wearing a simple ivory satin gown borrowed from the boutique owner who had heard about the fire that morning.

It wasn't my father's dress.

But somehow...

It felt stronger.

The ceremony began.

The music played.

Daniel smiled as I walked toward him.

Patricia wore the expression of someone convinced she had already won.

Then the officiant asked,

"Who gives this bride in marriage?"

"I do."

The voice came from the back.

Everyone turned.

Olivia walked down the aisle carrying a leather briefcase.

Behind her came Michael Graves.

Patricia's smile disappeared.

I faced the guests instead of the altar.

"I'm sorry to interrupt my own wedding," I began, "but before I marry into this family, everyone deserves to know who they really are."

Daniel looked confused.

"Emily, what are you doing?"

Olivia opened the briefcase.

"Mrs. Patricia Whitaker hired a private investigator to fabricate evidence that Emily had an affair and terminated a pregnancy."

Gasps swept through the audience.

"That's ridiculous!" Patricia shouted.

Michael stepped forward.

"I was that investigator."

He held up the signed contract.

"I refused to falsify evidence."

Olivia produced the receipt from Patricia's purse.

Then another document.

"And after Mr. Graves refused, Mrs. Whitaker contacted another investigator."

Patricia's face turned pale.

"There is one more thing."

The hotel's security manager approached with a tablet.

Surveillance footage filled the large display beside the altar.

The previous evening.

Patricia entered Emily's bridal suite carrying a candle.

She deliberately hung the wedding gown over the flame.

Then calmly stepped away before calling for help.

The audience fell silent.

Daniel stared at the screen in disbelief.

"Mom..."

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

"I did it for you," she finally whispered.

"I was protecting this family."

Daniel stepped backward.

"No."

"I knew she'd ruin your future."

"You ruined it."

He removed the wedding ring from his pocket.

Not mine.

His.

The one he had planned to place on my finger.

Instead, he set it on the altar.

"I can't marry someone while my own mother is trying to destroy her life."

Then he looked at Patricia.

May you like

"And I don't know if I can forgive you."

She collapsed into the front pew as reporters, invited to cover the society wedding, captured every second.
