Chapter 2: The Lie Hidden in Plain Sight

I folded the receipt and slipped it into my pocket before anyone noticed.

When I stepped out of the bathroom, the hallway had become a disaster zone. Hotel staff carried fire extinguishers away while my bridesmaids tried to salvage pieces of what had once been my wedding dress.

Patricia stood in the center of it all, accepting sympathy like a grieving widow.

"It was the most unfortunate accident," she sighed.

I watched her carefully.

She wasn't shaken.

She was waiting.

Waiting for me to lose control.

Instead, I smiled.

"I need some air," I said quietly.

Daniel reached for me.

"Emily, please don't leave."

"I'll be back."

Outside, I called the number printed on the investigator's receipt.

To my surprise, he answered.

"This is Michael Graves."

"My name is Emily Carter."

Silence.

Then he said, "I wondered when you'd call."

My pulse quickened.

"You were hired to investigate me."

"Yes."

"Did you find what Patricia wanted?"

Another pause.

"No."

"So why was she paying you to find proof I terminated a pregnancy?"

His voice became careful.

"Because she already had a story prepared."

"What story?"

"She planned to tell Daniel that you had secretly become pregnant by another man before the engagement... then ended the pregnancy to hide the affair."

The world tilted beneath me.

"That's insane."

"I know."

"Did you find any evidence?"

"None."

"So she paid you anyway?"

"I refused to fabricate a report."

He exhaled heavily.

"She became very angry."

"What happened then?"

"She hired someone else."

A chill ran through my body.

"You mean..."

"I mean if she couldn't find evidence..."

"...she may have decided to create it."

I thanked him and ended the call.

Before returning inside, I called one more person.

My college roommate, Olivia.

She now worked as an attorney specializing in civil fraud.

When I explained everything, she interrupted only once.

"Emily... don't get married tomorrow."

"I have to."

"No."

Her voice was firm.

"You have to expose them tomorrow."

For the first time that evening, I stopped crying.

Patricia thought she had destroyed my wedding.

She had no idea she had just handed me the evidence that would destroy her reputation instead.
