Chapter 2: A Monster Faces Himself
Three hours later, Dante sat alone outside the operating room.
For years he had built an empire through fear.
People feared his name.
Feared his money.
Feared his power.

But none of those things mattered now.
A nurse walked past carrying a tiny blue blanket.
Dante lowered his head.
For the first time in decades, he prayed.
Not for power.
Not for victory.
Not for revenge.
For Lena.
Just Lena.
Around midnight, the surgeon finally emerged.
Dante stood instantly.
The doctor's expression softened.
"The baby survived."
Dante nearly collapsed.
"And Lena?"
The doctor smiled faintly.
"She's still fighting. But she made it through surgery."
Tears filled Dante's eyes.
He didn't bother hiding them.
At that moment, two detectives entered the hallway.
Behind them came federal agents.
Vanessa had been arrested.
Her phone records, financial transfers, and messages to the hired attackers had already been recovered.
The evidence was overwhelming.
As officers escorted her away, she spotted Dante.
"Dante, please!"
He didn't move.
"Dante, I love you!"
His face remained emotionless.
Then he spoke the final words she would ever hear from him.
"No. You loved what I could give you."
The agents led her away.
She disappeared around the corner.
Forever.
For the first time, Dante felt no satisfaction.
Only regret.
Because none of this would have happened if he had not abandoned Lena in the first place.
The greatest crime in his life had not been violence.
It had been walking away from the woman who loved him.
