Chapter 4: More Than a Maid

Six months later...
The medical equipment was gone.
The curtains stood open every morning.
Sunlight filled the room that had once felt like a hospital.
Luna no longer counted the days she had left.
She counted butterflies in the garden.
Doctors officially declared her free of the mysterious poisoning and expected her to make a full recovery.
News of the conspiracy spread across the country.
Avery Collins was convicted of attempted murder, child abuse, and medical fraud.
Victor Hale received a lengthy prison sentence for conspiracy, fraud, and attempted homicide.
Their scheme had failed.
Richard, however, struggled with something no court could sentence.
Guilt.
"I was so busy trying to save her," he told Julia one afternoon, "that I never realized I was trusting the wrong people."
Julia looked toward the garden where Luna was laughing as she chased a golden retriever across the lawn.
"Love isn't measured by never making mistakes," she said softly.
"It's measured by what you do after you discover them."
Richard nodded.
"You saved my daughter."
Julia smiled.
"No."
"I simply noticed what everyone else stopped seeing."
A year later, the Wakefield mansion had changed completely.
The medical wing became a library filled with books, music, and sunlight.
Richard established a foundation that funded independent medical reviews for children with rare illnesses, ensuring that no family would ever rely on a single diagnosis without question.
As for Julia...
She never thought of herself as a hero.
She remained in Luna's life, not as a maid, but as family.
One evening, Luna slipped her small hand into Julia's.
"Can I still call you Mommy sometimes?"
Julia's eyes filled with tears.
"You can call me whenever you need me."
Luna hugged her tightly.
Outside, the music box Julia had placed beside the bed on her very first day played its gentle melody once more.
This time, it was no longer a reminder of fading hope.

It was the soundtrack of a second chance.
