Chapter 3: The Truth Comes to Light

Julia went straight to Richard's office.
He barely looked up from his desk.
"I told you not to interrupt business meetings."
She placed the laboratory report in front of him.
Then the recording.
Then the letter from the trust.
His expression hardened.
"What is this?"
"Please."
"Read."
For nearly five minutes, the room remained silent except for the sound of turning pages.
Richard's face slowly lost all color.
"Impossible."
Julia met his eyes.
"It isn't."
He rushed upstairs.
Avery was preparing another injection.
"Step away from my daughter."
She smiled confidently.
"Mr. Wakefield, you're upset."
He snatched the syringe from her hand.
Security officers entered moments later.
One restrained Avery while another searched her medical bag.
Inside were multiple unlabeled vials.
Hospital investigators later confirmed they contained medications never prescribed to Luna—drugs capable of gradually weakening a healthy child while mimicking symptoms of chronic illness.
Under questioning, Avery finally confessed.
She hadn't acted alone.
Richard's longtime financial adviser, Victor Hale, had recruited her.
If Luna died, control of the Wakefield Trust would temporarily pass to Victor until another heir could be established.
The fortune was worth nearly two billion dollars.
Greed had nearly cost a little girl her life.
Both Avery and Victor were arrested before sunset.
As detectives led them away in handcuffs, Richard remained kneeling beside Luna's bed.
"I'm so sorry," he whispered through tears.
Luna reached for his hand.
