Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Empire

By sunrise, the Greenwich estate looked less like a private manor and more like a command center for a federal investigation.

News vans crowded the private gates half a mile down the road, their satellite dishes pointed toward the sky as reporters breathlessly covered the spectacular morning raid on Reed Industries' headquarters and the subsequent arrest of Chief Operating Officer Richard Vance.

In the grand library, where the morning sun filtered through the tall stained-glass windows in warm amber bars, the atmosphere was quiet and solemn.

Nathaniel sat at his desk, reviewing a preliminary press release drafted by his legal team. The corporate board had already dissolved in the wake of Vance’s arrest, with federal investigators uncovering a massive web of embezzlement, corporate sabotage, and the suppression of safety reports related to Evelyn’s untimely death.

A soft knock sounded at the open door.

I stood there holding a tray with two cups of coffee, wearing my standard staff uniform, though it felt entirely out of place now.

"Come in, Sarah," Nathaniel said, looking up with a tired, genuine smile.

I stepped into the room, setting the tray down on the corner of the massive mahogany desk. "The federal agents just finished interviewing the staff. They said our statements won't be needed again until the grand jury convenes next month."

Nathaniel stood up, walking around the desk to face me directly. The expensive charcoal suit was rumpled from a sleepless night, but his posture was upright, free of the crushing burden that had weighed him down for two years.

"Sarah," he said softly, his voice carrying a quiet gravity. "You and Sophia don't need to worry about staff duties anymore. In fact, the board—what's left of it—unanimously approved a restructuring initiative for the Reed Philanthropic Foundation. Evelyn’s dance foundation is being re-established, and we need someone with absolute integrity, intelligence, and grace to direct its community outreach programs."

I stared at him, stunned. "Mr. Reed... I’m a housekeeper. I don't have a background in corporate management."

"You have something far more valuable," Nathaniel interrupted gently, stepping closer. "You have courage. You stood your ground when armed men broke into this house, and you protected my son as if he were your own."

He paused, a faint, tender smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Besides... Evelyn trusted you enough to let your daughter find her legacy. I think she knew exactly what she was doing."
