Chapter 6 - The Breach

The heavy thud of combat boots echoed faintly from the carpeted corridor outside the fourth-floor suite.
One, two, three.
They were moving in a tactical sweep, professional, quiet, and deadly efficient. Vance hadn't sent low-level thugs; he had deployed corporate security contractors who specialized in hostile takeovers of a very permanent variety.
I gripped the heavy brass poker tighter, my palms slick with sweat. Behind me, the frantic clicking of Nathaniel’s keyboard continued unabated.
Ninety-eight percent.
A soft, metallic click sounded at the door handle. They weren't knocking. They weren't announcing themselves. The master electronic bypass key was at work.
"Sarah," Nathaniel whispered, his voice urgent. "Ninety-nine. Almost there—"
The heavy oak door lurched inward as the deadbolt sheared under a hydraulic breaching tool. The brass security chain strained, snapping with a loud crack that reverberated through the quiet suite.
I didn't hesitate. As the door swung open, revealing the dark silhouette of a burly man in tactical gear, I swung the brass poker with all the fury of a cornered animal. It connected squarely with his shoulder, sending him stumbling back into the hallway with a sharp grunt.
"Clear the room!" a harsh voice barked from the corridor.
Two more operatives rushed forward, their movements swift and calculated. One of them lunged past my swing, grabbing the shaft of the poker and wrenching it out of my hands with brutal ease. I stumbled backward, crashing against a side table and sending a ceramic lamp shattering across the floor.
Sophia woke up with a terrified shriek.
"Daddy!" Eli wailed, scrambling out of the guest bed and running toward Nathaniel.
Nathaniel didn't turn around. His eyes were locked on the monitor as a bright green dialogue box flashed across the screen: DOWNLOAD COMPLETE. ARCHIVE SECURED.
With a single, fluid motion, Nathaniel ripped the high-capacity encrypted solid-state drive from the USB port, shoved it into his suit pocket, and stood up to face the intruders.
The lead operative—a scarred man with cold, dead eyes—stepped into the room, leveling a suppressed tactical pistol directly at Nathaniel’s chest.
"Mr. Reed," the operative said smoothly, his voice devoid of emotion. "Mr. Vance sends his regards. He said the corporate transition will be much smoother without your interference."
Nathaniel stood tall, shielding his son behind his legs. His face was a mask of icy composure. "Vance is too late. The files are already broadcasting to an automated secure server off-site. The moment you pull that trigger, my legal team—and federal prosecutors—will receive the complete unedited dossier of every crime Richard has committed over the past decade."

The operative’s eyes narrowed. He glanced at the glowing monitors, calculating the risk.
Before he could make a decision, a bright flash of light and a deafening siren echoed through the entire estate.
