Chapter 7 - The Final Confrontation

Emily backed away slowly until her lower back pressed firmly against the edge of the glass desk. Her fingers were pressed hard against the emergency speed-dial button in her pocket, praying that Daniel’s phone was connecting, praying that he was still in the building.

"I don't have the decryption key, Marcus," Emily lied smoothly, keeping her eyes locked on his. "It’s already uploaded to the federal prosecutor's cloud server on an automated time-release loop. If I don't enter my biometric authorization code every thirty minutes, the entire unredacted cache goes public to every major news outlet in the world."

Marcus stopped in his tracks, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. He knew she might be bluffing, but he couldn't afford to take the risk. He whipped his right hand out of his trench coat pocket—and in his grip was a heavy, silenced semi-automatic pistol, the dark barrel gleaming menacingly under the fluorescent lights.

"You always were entirely too clever for your own good, Emily," Marcus hissed, raising the weapon and leveling it directly at her chest. "A tragic workplace accident in the Hawthorne data archives... a sudden electrical fire caused by overloaded server units. It writes itself."

Emily braced herself, her mind racing for an escape route, but the server racks boxed her in on three sides, and Marcus stood directly between her and the only exit door.

"Drop the gun, Marcus."

The deep, resonant voice echoed from the end of the archival corridor like the crack of thunder.

Marcus spun around, pointing the weapon toward the voice. Standing at the end of the aisle, framed by the bright light of the main hallway, was Daniel Hawthorne. His tuxedo jacket was gone, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, and his expression was an absolute mask of cold, lethal fury. He wasn't alone; three armed Hawthorne private security officers flanked him, their weapons drawn and trained squarely on Marcus.

"Don't even think about it, Vance," Daniel warned, taking a measured, deliberate step forward. "Your escape helicopter was intercepted on the roof ten minutes ago. You’re entirely surrounded."

Marcus laughed hysterically, his grip on the pistol tightening as he swung the barrel back toward Emily. "Then I’ll take her with me!"

Before Marcus could pull the trigger, Emily dropped flat to the floor behind the heavy glass desk.

Crack.

A silenced bullet shattered the corner of the glass desktop, sending a spray of sharp shards cascading across the carpet. Instantly, three consecutive retorts erupted from Hawthorne’s security detail as professional-grade incapacitation rounds struck Marcus squarely in the shoulder and legs.

Marcus cried out in pain, his weapon clattering loudly against the polished linoleum floor as he collapsed hard against the base of the server rack.

Within seconds, security officers swarmed forward, kicking the weapon away, pinning Marcus to the ground, and snapping heavy steel zip-ties around his wrists.

Daniel rushed past the guards, dropping to his knees beside the desk where Emily was huddled. He pulled her gently into his arms, checking her over frantically.

"Emily! Are you hit? Are you alright?" Daniel asked, his voice cracking with raw emotion that completely stripped away his usual corporate armor.

May you like

Emily looked up at him, her hands trembling as she grabbed the lapels of his shirt, letting out a breathless, shuddering sob of pure relief. "I’m... I’m okay, Daniel. I’m okay."

Daniel pulled her tightly against his chest, burying his face in her hair. In that quiet, charged moment amidst the hum of the server racks, the corporate wars, the federal raids, and the years of fear completely dissolved away.
