Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Corporate Corridor

Despite the rapid collapse of Vance Logistics, the battle was far from over. Corporate empires of that scale do not fall without thrashing violently in their death throes.

Three days after the initial raids, Emily was working late in the secure data archives of the Hawthorne tower. The sprawling archive room was lined with rows of climate-controlled server racks and dark walnut study carrels, illuminated only by the soft, ambient glow of computer screens and overhead LED strips.

She was cross-referencing encrypted wire transfers between shell companies in Panama and municipal port accounts when a sudden, cold draft swept through the corridor.

Emily paused, her fingers resting lightly on the keyboard. The archives were on a secure, biometric-locked floor accessible only to authorized senior executives and federal investigators. The heavy steel fire door at the end of the hall remained shut, its green indicator light glowing steadily.

Click.

The sound of a shoe heel scraping against the carpet echoed softly from the row of server racks behind her.

Emily’s breath caught. She slowly stood up from her chair, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Hello?" she called out, her voice echoing off the metal panels of the servers. "Who’s there?"

From the shadows between Rack 4 and Rack 5 stepped a tall, imposing figure wearing a dark trench coat with the collar turned up. As the person stepped into the overhead light, Emily’s blood ran cold.

It wasn't Arthur Vance, and it wasn't Vanessa. It was Marcus Vance—Arthur’s younger brother and the chief general counsel for Vance Logistics, a man who had successfully kept his name off the primary indictment lists by operating entirely in the legal gray zones of the corporate underworld.

"Dr. Porter," Marcus said smoothly, a cold, predatory smile playing on his lips. He kept his hands casually tucked inside his trench coat pockets, though Emily could see the subtle, dangerous tension in his shoulders. "I must admit, you are remarkably difficult to exterminate. My niece tried her best to bury you at that gala, but incompetence runs deep in our family."

Emily’s hand in her blazer pocket quietly groped for her smartphone, her thumb pressing the emergency speed-dial shortcut she had programmed specifically for Daniel Hawthorne.

"You shouldn't be here, Marcus," Emily said, forcing her voice to remain steady, though adrenaline surged through her veins. "The federal marshals are already looking for you. Every terminal in this building is monitored."

"Let them look," Marcus scoffed, taking a slow step toward her. His eyes glittered with manic desperation. "Vance Logistics is already destroyed. My brother is behind bars, Vanessa is facing a decade in a federal penitentiary, and everything my family built over three generations is gone in a puff of smoke because of a stubborn, self-righteous little whistleblower."

He took another step closer, his smile vanishing, replaced by a dark, threatening scowl. "If I’m going down, Dr. Porter, I am taking my insurance policy with me. Hand over the master decryption key to the offline blockchain ledger, and maybe—just maybe—I’ll let you walk out of this building breathing."
