Chapter 3 - The Broken Past

Three weeks passed in a blur of quiet luxury and intense, domestic intimacy inside the Valente estate.
Under Hannah’s constant, devoted care, little Luca thrived. His cheeks filled out, his pale skin turned a healthy pink, and he began to laugh softly in his sleep. Hannah fed him, bathed him, and held him through every midnight cry, filling the cold, empty rooms of the master wing with the warm, comforting scent of lavender, baby lotion, and fresh-baked vanilla biscuits.
Adrien, who usually spent eighteen hours a day in dark boardrooms and private warehouses, began coming home by 6:00 PM every night.
He sat on the rug in the nursery, taking off his tie and dark jacket, learning how to hold his son’s bottle, how to change diapers, and how to burp him without causing him to spit up.
For Hannah, the intense grief over losing Grace didn't disappear, but in saving Luca, her broken heart found a purpose—a quiet sanctuary where her love had a place to land.
On a rainy Thursday afternoon, while Luca was sleeping peacefully in his crib, Adrien walked into the nursery holding a thick leather folder.
"Hannah," Adrien said quietly. "Sit with me."
Hannah sat down on the velvet sofa, looking at the serious expression on his face. "Is something wrong with Luca?"
"Luca is perfect," Adrien said, sitting beside her, leaving only an inch of space between them. He opened the folder, revealing several financial documents, bank statements, and photographs. "My security team found your ex-boyfriend, Mark, in Atlantic City."
Hannah’s body went rigid. The memory of finding her empty bank account and the stolen funeral money rushed back like a physical blow. "What... what did you do to him?"
"He spent forty thousand dollars of your money at the roulette tables in thirty-six hours," Adrien said flatly, his dark eyes devoid of mercy. "My men recovered the remaining fifteen thousand dollars. But more importantly..."
Adrien slid a cashier's check across the table for two hundred thousand dollars, made out directly to Hannah’s Heavenly Bakery.
Hannah gasped, covering her mouth with trembling hands. "Adrien... I can't take this."
"That isn't my money, Hannah," Adrien explained softly, reaching out to touch her hand gently. "I seized Mark’s assets, sold his vehicle, and liquidated his holdings. That is your stolen money, returned with full interest for the pain he caused you."
Tears welled up in Hannah’s eyes, spilling down her cheeks. She looked at the check, then up at the formidable man sitting beside her. "Why are you doing all of this for me? I was just a wet nurse you picked up from a broken store."
Adrien didn't pull his hand back. Instead, his fingers intertwined with hers, his large, warm hand clasping her small, delicate fingers with protective strength.
"You aren't just a wet nurse, Hannah," Adrien said, his deep voice thick with genuine emotion. "You are the woman who brought life back into this dead house. You saved my son. And every day I watch you smile at him, I realize I don't want you to ever walk out those front gates."
Hannah’s heart hammered frantically against her ribs. She looked into his dark, intense eyes, seeing not the terrifying mob boss the world feared, but a man who was looking at her as if she were the only thing that mattered in the world.
"Adrien... my life is a mess," Hannah whispered, her voice trembling. "I'm still grieving. I'm a broken baker from Queens. Your world is dangerous and complex."
"Then let me protect you from the world," Adrien promised, leaning closer until his forehead rested against hers. "I don't care about Queens. I don't care about high society. I care about you."
Before Hannah could respond, the nursery intercom chimed with a sharp, urgent beep.
Marco’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and alarmed. "Don Valente. We have a situation in the grand ballroom. Don Moretti and his daughter Victoria have arrived with twelve armed men. They are demanding an emergency commission meeting."

Adrien’s jaw tightened, his gentle expression instant reverting back to cold, hard steel.
He stood up, kissing the back of Hannah’s hand gently. "Stay here with Luca. I will settle this once and for all."
