Chapter 2 - The Velvet Cage

The Valente Estate in Upper Manhattan was not merely a house; it was a fortress of dark granite, wrought iron, and bulletproof glass overlooking Central Park.
By 2:00 AM, the convoy of heavy black SUVs pulled through the grand iron gates, past dozens of armed guards in crisp suits, stopping at the foot of a grand marble staircase.
Hannah stepped out into the crisp night air, holding Luca wrapped securely against her chest inside a cashmere blanket Adrien had draped over them during the drive.
The interior of the mansion was vast, silent, and suffocatingly luxurious. High ceilings, mahogany paneling, and priceless Renaissance paintings adorned the corridors, yet the air felt cold, empty, and devoid of life—like a museum built for a solitary king.
Adrien led Hannah directly to the second-floor master suite. A spacious nursery had been set up in an adjoining room, filled with hand-carved Italian cribs, plush silk toys, and thousands of dollars worth of untouched medical equipment.
"This was prepared for him," Adrien said, standing in the doorway with his hands shoved into his pockets. "His mother... Julianna... she never wanted to see it. She wanted a life in Paris, not a baby with a Valente."
Hannah looked at him, noticing the subtle shadow of grief and anger that passed across his sharp jaw. "Did she die in childbirth?"
"She died in a car crash three days ago in Milan," Adrien said flatly, his voice lacking any romantic grief. "She was running away with one of my rival's lieutenants. She left Luca in an incubator at a private clinic before she died."
Hannah held the baby closer against her shoulder, patting his tiny back until he let out a tiny, satisfying burp. "Then he’s better off here with you."
Adrien looked at her, his dark eyes narrowing slightly. "You aren't afraid of me, Hannah. Everyone in this city looks at me and sees a monster."
"Monsters don't fall to their knees in a greasy bakery office and weep for their sons, Mr. Valente," Hannah replied softly, settling onto a soft velvet armchair in the nursery. "I see a father who was terrified."
Adrien stared at her for a long, quiet moment. In the soft light of the nursery lamp, Hannah Brooks looked like a vision of pure, unyielding light against the dark, violent backdrop of his life. Her flour-dusted clothes, her simple, unvarnished beauty, and the profound strength in her eyes drawn from her own terrible grief fascinated him in a way no high-society woman ever had.
Before Adrien could speak, the nursery door clicked open.
A tall, striking woman with sleek dark hair, wearing a tailored crimson jumpsuit and emerald jewelry, stepped into the room. This was Victoria Moretti, the daughter of New York’s secondary crime family and Adrien’s political fiancée—a arrangement arranged by Adrien’s late father three years prior.
Victoria’s eyes flicked from Adrien to Hannah sitting in the chair with the baby, her red lips curving into a sharp, venomous sneer.
"Adrien, darling," Victoria purred, her voice dripping with artificial warmth. "I heard you brought a wet nurse from Queens. Is this the peasant girl who was weeping over her bankrupt pastry shop?"
Hannah’s posture straightened instantly, her chin rising with quiet dignity.
Adrien’s demeanor shifted from quiet contemplation to pure, absolute sub-zero ice. He stepped between Victoria and Hannah, his towering frame blocking Victoria’s view completely.
"Watch your mouth in this room, Victoria," Adrien growled, his voice a dangerous whisper.
Victoria blinked, surprised by the venom in his tone. "Adrien! I am your betrothed! My father controls the docks in Brooklyn! You cannot speak to me like that over a housemaid!"
"You are my betrothed because my father made a promise before he died," Adrien said, taking a slow, menacing step toward her. "A promise I am currently considering dissolving. You haven't looked at my son once since he was born. You called him a tactical inconvenience."
Victoria’s face flushed red with humiliation. She glared past Adrien’s shoulder at Hannah. "She doesn't belong here, Adrien! Look at her! She’s dressed in rags! She’s taking advantage of your grief!"
"She saved Luca’s life while your doctors stood around giving speeches," Adrien stated coldly. "Marco will escort you to your car."
"This isn't over, Adrien!" Victoria hissed, her heels clicking angrily against the hardwood floor as she spun around. "My father will hear about this insult!"
The heavy door slammed shut behind her.
Hannah let out a slow breath, gently stroking Luca’s soft hair. "You didn't have to cause trouble with your family for me, Mr. Valente."
May you like
Adrien turned around, walking over to stand beside her chair. He leaned down, his warm breath fanning against her cheek as he looked down into her eyes with an intensity that made her pulse race.
"No one disrespects you in this house, Hannah," Adrien murmured, his voice rich and low. "Not Victoria. Not her father. Not anyone."
