Chapter 5 - Dawn Over the Lake

By late evening, the storm had completely passed, leaving the Chicago skyline washed clean under a canopy of brilliant autumn stars.

Inside the Gold Coast mansion, the house was warm and quiet. The fire in the master suite crackled softly, casting dancing golden shadows across the Persian rugs and mahogany furniture.

Clara sat curled up in the window seat, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket, sipping a cup of honey chamomile tea. She watched the distant lights of the city skyline twinkling across the dark waters of Lake Michigan.

The heavy oak door opened quietly, and Dominic stepped into the room. He had removed his tie and jacket, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, looking tired but completely at peace.

He walked over to the window seat, knelt beside her, and rested his hands on the fabric covering her knees.

“It’s over,” Dominic murmured softly. “Julian Vance has been arrested by federal marshals, the zoning department is being completely audited, and Sloane Harrington has already packed her bags to move to New York.”

Clara looked down at him, her eyes searching his face for any lingering shadow of the ruthless underworld figure the city feared. But she found only the man who loved her.

She set her teacup down on the small side table, reached out, and gently cupped his cheek.

“Did you have to be so terrifying today?” she asked, a faint, teasing smile playing at the corners of her lips.

Dominic caught her hand, pressing a soft kiss to her palm. “Sometimes the only way to protect the people you love is to make sure nobody ever dares to look at them twice.”

“I don't need protection from a glance, Dom,” she whispered. “I just need you.”

He stood up, sliding his arms around her waist, lifting her effortlessly from the window seat and carrying her toward the large mahogany bed.

May you like

“You have me,” Dominic whispered against her lips, his voice thick with a fierce, unwavering devotion. “For as long as the city stands.”

As the moonlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, bathing the room in silver light, Clara closed her eyes and let herself sink into the safety of his embrace. The world outside was cold, ruthless, and unforgiving—but inside the walls they had built together, there was only warmth, peace, and an eternity of quiet tomorrows.
