CHAPTER 2: THE TRUTH ABOUT JENNY
Over the next few weeks, Marco quietly made sure the rent issue disappeared.
Officially, the building had entered a "renovation assistance program."
Unofficially, Marco paid every overdue bill himself.
Jenny never knew.
At least not at first.
Meanwhile, little Liam slowly recovered.
His breathing improved.
His laughter returned.
And somehow, Marco found himself visiting more often than he intended.
One evening Liam handed him a drawing.
Three stick figures.
Marco.
Jenny.
Liam.
Holding hands.

Marco stared at it for a long time.
"You forgot someone," he joked.
Liam smiled.
"No."
That answer stayed with him all night.
A month later, Marco learned the truth.
Jenny's husband wasn't dead.
He had abandoned them.
Not only that.
He had left behind nearly $90,000 in debt under Jenny's name.
Medical bills.
Credit cards.
Loans.
She had spent years working two jobs just to keep Liam fed.
Marco sat silently while she told him everything.
"I sold my wedding ring."
She laughed bitterly.
"Then my car."
Another laugh.
"Then my furniture."
Her voice cracked.
"And finally my phone."
Marco looked away.
Because for the first time in years, he felt something dangerously close to heartbreak.
Not for himself.
For her.
For the woman who kept sacrificing pieces of her life so her son could survive.
Then another discovery surfaced.
The debt wasn't legal.
Most of it had been forged.
Her ex-husband had committed fraud.
And he had recently returned to Ohio.
