Chapter 3 - Into the Underbelly

The transition from the opulence of the ballroom to the cold, industrial silence of the basement levels of the Bellweather Club was jarring. Adrian didn't let go of her. He kept her tucked against his side, Kael and two other guards forming an impenetrable perimeter around them.
“We’re going to the loading docks,” Adrian commanded. “Kael, signal the team. We go out the back, through the service tunnel.”
“And Vincent?” Kael asked.
“If he moves, we neutralize.”
Mara felt the reality of her decision settling in like a lead weight. She was no longer a bartender; she was an accomplice to the most dangerous man in the city. She glanced at Adrian, studying the sharp lines of his profile. He was calm, focused, and utterly devoid of fear.
“Why are you protecting me?” she asked, her voice cracking as they stepped into a service elevator. “I’m a liability. You could just hand me over and walk away.”
Adrian pressed the button for the sub-basement. He turned to her, his gray eyes searching hers with a intensity that made the small elevator feel even smaller.
“Handing you over would mean admitting I couldn't protect someone who sought my help,” Adrian said, his voice quiet. “And more importantly, you know something Calder doesn't know you know. If you saw what was on that drive, or even just where he hid it, you’re the most valuable piece on the board right now. I don't leave valuable pieces for my enemies to take.”
The elevator jolted to a stop. The doors slid open to reveal a concrete corridor. Suddenly, a muffled thud-thud echoed through the space.
“Down!” Adrian shouted, tackling Mara to the ground just as a bullet sparked against the steel door frame.
The air filled with the chaotic symphony of gunfire. Kael returned fire, the sound deafening in the confined space. Mara scrambled behind a heavy steel cart, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Adrian was beside her, his weapon drawn—a sleek, suppressed pistol that he fired with terrifying precision. He wasn't panicking; he was executing a plan.

“Kael, take the right flank!” Adrian ordered. “Mara, keep your head down.”
He reached over and grabbed her hand, squeezing it. For a second, the violence disappeared, replaced by the strange, magnetic connection they had sparked in the ballroom. “This is where it gets difficult,” he said, his eyes locking onto hers. “Trust me.”
