Chapter 2 - The Price of a Secret

Adrian’s gaze was like a clinical instrument, dissecting the truth from her panic. The ballroom, once a place of celebration, had now become a cage. The music, the laughter, the tinkling of champagne flutes—all of it seemed distant, muffled by the sheer weight of what Mara had just witnessed.

“I saw everything,” Mara breathed, keeping her voice low, a trembling whisper meant only for him. “He took something from Raymond’s coat. A drive. Silver.”

Adrian’s arm remained firmly around her waist, but the grip had shifted from a performance of possession to a shield of tactical protection. He signaled to the scarred man—Kael, his head of security—with a subtle tilt of his chin. Kael vanished into the crowd without a sound.

“Why did you come to me, Mara?” Adrian asked, his voice barely audible over the swelling strings of the orchestra. “You could have chosen anyone. You could have walked out the front door, kept your head down, and lived to see tomorrow.”

“I tried the front door,” she said, her chest heaving. “Vincent had his men there. If I ran, he would have hunted me down. I needed someone he was afraid of.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed, a glint of genuine curiosity surfacing through the cold mask he wore. “You analyzed the room. You identified the hierarchy of fear.”

“I’ve worked in New York for three years,” Mara countered, gaining a fraction of her courage back. “You learn who runs the streets by watching who the monsters avoid.”

Adrian let out a soft, humorless chuckle that vibrated through his chest. “Monsters. Is that what you think we are?”

“I think you’re a man who just lost a valuable contact,” she said, looking him straight in the eye. “Raymond Pike wasn't just an accountant, was he?”

Adrian’s hand tightened on her neck, just enough to be a reminder of who held the power, but it wasn't a threat—it was an acknowledgment. “Raymond was the keeper of the ledger. He knew where every cent of the city’s underbelly flowed. If Calder has that drive, he doesn't just have a list of names. He has a map to the city’s throat.”

Before she could respond, Kael reappeared, his face grim. He leaned in, whispering into Adrian’s ear. Adrian’s face went deadly still.

“Calder isn’t leaving,” Adrian said to Mara. “He’s initiating a perimeter lock. He knows you saw him, and he knows you talked to me. He isn't going to let either of us leave this building until he’s certain that drive—or the information in your head—is erased.”
