Chapter 4 - The Courtroom Showdown

Three months later.

The spring sun warmed the marble steps of the Manhattan Family Court building as Rebecca walked down them, wearing a sharp, tailored cream-colored trench coat, her dark hair falling in soft waves past her shoulders, and her nine-month baby bump proudly visible beneath her belt.

Beside her walked her father, Arthur, and Marcus, carrying their legal briefs.

Waiting at the bottom of the steps, surrounded by a swarm of aggressive reporters and local news cameras, was Trevor Sterling.

He looked unrecognizable. His designer suit was wrinkled, his hair unwashed, and the arrogant smirk that had once defined his face was replaced by a look of desperate, unhinged fury.

As Rebecca approached, Trevor lunged forward past the barricades, his voice screeching over the shutter clicks of the press.

“Rebecca! You can’t do this! You’re stealing my children! You’re a vindictive liar—”

He didn't get another word out.

Arthur Vance stepped smoothly in front of his daughter, his towering frame and ice-cold glare stopping Trevor dead in his tracks. At the same time, two uniformed court officers stepped forward, placing heavy silver handcuffs around Trevor’s wrists.

The judge’s ruling that morning had been absolute: full, sole legal and physical custody granted to the mother, a permanent restraining order prohibiting Trevor within five hundred yards of Rebecca or the children, and a criminal trial date set for felony assault and financial fraud.

Trevor thrashed uselessly as the officers led him away toward a waiting police transport van, cursing his father-in-law’s name to the empty sky.

Rebecca watched him go. There was no triumph in her heart—only a profound, beautiful emptiness where the fear used to live.
