Chapter 1 - The Three Seconds

The heavy oak front door shuddered under a firm, measured knock.

Trevor froze in his pacing, his pale blue eyes darting frantically from Rebecca bleeding on the carpet to the brass deadbolt. The color drained from his face, leaving him looking less like a domestic tyrant and more like a cornered boy caught in a lie.

“Don’t you dare,” Trevor hissed, pointing a trembling finger at her. “You tell anyone about this, and I swear to God I’ll take Emma away. You have no money, no family, and no job. Who do you think a judge is going to believe? A broke housewife or a rising junior partner at Sterling & Vance?”

Rebecca sat in a pool of her own blood, eighteen months old Emma still wailing against her chest, her baby kicking furiously inside her six-month womb.

Three seconds.

That was all she had.

She could crawl to the door, open it, and lie. She could mumble something about tripping over a toy, protecting the man who had just shattered her tooth, keeping up the fragile illusion of their suburban perfection.

Or she could choose fire.

The knock came again. Louder this time.

And then a voice pierced through the wood—a voice that had haunted Trevor’s nightmares and commanded corporate courtrooms across the East Coast for thirty years.

“Rebecca. Open the door. Now.”

It was her father. Arthur Vance. The billionaire shipping magnate and senior partner of the very law firm Trevor worked for.

Trevor’s face turned the color of ash. He hadn’t known Arthur was in town. He certainly didn’t know Arthur kept tabs on his daughters, no matter how distant they had grown since Rebecca eloped and cut ties to prove she could live a "normal, independent life."

Rebecca looked down at the blood staining her maternity shirt. She touched the jagged space where her tooth used to be. The fear that had kept her small, silent, and obedient for four long years suddenly evaporated, replaced by a cold, absolute clarity.

She shifted Emma carefully into one arm, pushed herself up off the floor, and walked straight to the door.

Trevor lunged to block her, his hand raised again. “Rebecca, stop—”

She didn't stop. She turned the deadbolt, pulled the door open, and looked straight into her father’s shocked, furious eyes.
