CHAPTER 2 – THE WOMAN AT THE DOOR

The silence that followed the phone call lasted only a heartbeat.
Then the front door opened.
A woman in a charcoal-gray business suit stepped inside, carrying a slim leather briefcase. Behind her stood two uniformed security officers and a middle-aged man with silver hair.
Adrian frowned.
"Who are you?"
The woman ignored him.
She walked directly toward me and gave a respectful nod.
"Mrs. Blackwood."
"Everything has been executed exactly as instructed."
I smiled politely.
"Thank you, Ms. Harper."
Adrian's father suddenly staggered backward.
"No..."
He recognized her.
Margaret Harper.
Chief Legal Counsel for Blackwood International Holdings.
One of the most powerful corporate attorneys in the country.
She wasn't here by accident.
She was here because I had summoned her.
Margaret placed several folders on the dining table.
"According to the prenuptial agreement signed forty-eight hours ago, any confirmed act of physical abuse immediately activates Article Nine."
She opened the first folder.
"The Blackwood Family Trust has officially revoked every financial privilege granted to the Blake family."
Adrian laughed nervously.
"What financial privilege?"
Margaret looked at him without emotion.
"The mansion."
"The investment accounts."
"The luxury vehicles."
"The business expansion loan."
"The yacht."
"The private credit lines."
"They were never owned by your family."
"They were leased through Blackwood assets."
Silence.
His mother looked at her husband.
His father looked at me.
Neither could breathe.
Margaret continued.
"The Blackwood family allowed the Blake family to manage these assets after your companies nearly collapsed three years ago."
She slid another document forward.
"You were caretakers."
"Not owners."
Adrian whispered,
"...Impossible."
I quietly reached into my purse and placed a faded photograph on the table.
It showed my late grandfather shaking hands with Adrian's grandfather decades earlier.
"My grandfather saved your family once."
"My father believed loyalty deserved another chance."
"But loyalty ends the moment violence begins."
Nobody spoke.
Outside, several luxury cars rolled through the front gate.
May you like
This time, they weren't arriving as guests.
They were arriving to take everything back.
