Chapter 5 - Dawn Over the Horizon

Three weeks later, the autumn chill gave way to a bright, crisp morning.
The medical bandages had finally come off Lily’s eyes. Sitting propped up against the pillows in her hospital bed, she blinked against the gentle morning sunlight streaming through the window, her bright brown eyes clear, healthy, and full of life.
“Mom, look!” Lily cheered, holding up a brand-new box of colorful sketch pens. “The nurse says I can start drawing again today!”
I smiled, my heart swelling with a profound, overwhelming wave of relief as I kissed the top of her head. “You draw as many pictures as you want, sweetheart.”

“How’s our little artist doing?” Daniel whispered softly.
“She’s perfect,” I replied, leaning back against his chest and resting my hand over his.

The past could not be rewritten, and the scars of betrayal would take time to heal. But as I looked at my daughter’s bright, smiling face and the unwavering love in my husband’s eyes, I knew the darkness was finally behind us.
We had survived the storm. And our future belonged to us.
