Chapter 2 - The Confrontation in the Living Room

When we pulled up to our house in the cul-de-sac, the birthday balloons were still tied to the porch railing, fluttering uselessly in the cold evening wind. Inside, the half-cut cake sat on the dining table, surrounded by paper plates and empty juice cups. Our guests had long since fled, leaving behind an eerie, suffocating silence.

Margaret was sitting on the living room sofa. She had removed her coat, but she still wore her pearls. When the front door opened and Daniel walked in flanked by Officer Ramos and his partner, Margaret didn't even stand up. She adjusted her skirt with maddening composure.

“Well,” Margaret said, her voice dripping with artificial annoyance. “It took you long enough. All this over a little dramatics? Children these days are so delicate—they cry over everything.”

I marched across the room, my hands shaking so violently I could barely form words. “You poisoned our daughter!”

Margaret scoffed, rolling her eyes toward the ceiling. “Don't be absurd, Claire. It was a toy set I bought online. How should I know what the manufacturer put in it? You’re always looking for someone to blame for your own hysterical paranoia.”

“It wasn't a toy set, Margaret,” Daniel said. His voice was terrifyingly low. He walked over to the coffee table and dropped the plastic evidence bag right in front of her. “The police lab confirmed it. It was sodium hydroxide and ground glass.”

Margaret blinked. For a fraction of a second, her composure fractured—just a twitch of her left eyelid, a sudden intake of breath. But she recovered with chilling speed, leaning back against the cushions.

“And you think I did that?” Margaret sneered, looking up at her son with faux betrayal. “I am your mother! I spent two weeks wrapping that gift for my granddaughter! You’re going to stand there and listen to these strangers accuse me because your emotional wife can’t handle a little accident?”

“Mom, stop,” Daniel commanded, stepping closer. “The package wasn't ordered online. The shipping label underneath the barcode was printed from a commercial supply store in downtown Manhattan. A store registered under your maiden name.”

Officer Ramos stepped forward, resting his hand on his belt near his handcuffs. “Margaret Miller, you are being detained for questioning regarding the intentional poisoning of a minor. Anything you say can and will be used against you.”

Margaret finally stood up, her face twisting into an ugly, venomous mask. Gone was the sweet, doting grandmother routine. She glared at Daniel with pure malice.

“You fool,” Margaret hissed, her voice vibrating with venom. “You think you’re so smart protecting this little family of yours? You have no idea what’s coming. You think I’m the monster? Look closer at your own house, Daniel. Look at what your father left behind before he died!”

Officer Ramos gently grabbed her arm, spinning her around and reading her rights as he clicked the steel handcuffs around her wrists.

As they led her out the front door, Margaret turned her head back over her shoulder, her eyes locked on Daniel with a chilling promise.

“Check the safe in the basement, Daniel,” she screamed as they pushed her into the back of the cruiser. “Ask your precious wife where the real money came from!”
