Chapter 10 - A New Dawn
Six months later, the house on Elmwood Avenue was completely gone, demolished by order of the city council to clear away a dark chapter of local history. In its place, a small community garden was planted, filled with bright yellow daffodils and green grass that caught the afternoon sunlight without a single shadow.
In a quiet, sunlit apartment overlooking a calm lake two hours outside the city, a little girl sat at a wooden kitchen table, coloring a picture of a golden retriever with bright pink crayons.
Emily’s hair was long, healthy, and brushed smooth. Her laughter, which had been silenced for so long, now bubbled up easily whenever the family cat chased its own tail across the hardwood floor.
David stood by the kitchen counter, pouring two glasses of fresh orange juice. He looked out the window at the sparkling water of the lake, feeling a deep, abiding peace settle into his soul for the first time in years.
Emily looked up from her drawing, smiled brightly, and held up the paper for him to see.
"Look, Dad! I gave the dog a superhero cape!" she announced proudly.
David walked over, placed the juice on the table, and knelt down beside her chair, wrapping his arms around her small shoulders.
