Chapter 9 - Morning Light

The sun rose slowly over Elmwood Avenue, casting pale, golden rays of autumn light across a scene that had transformed from a quiet suburban home into a heavily guarded crime scene.

Yellow police tape crisscrossed the front porch, the driveway, and the side gates. News vans were beginning to park down the street, their satellite dishes pointing toward the sky as reporters whispered urgently into microphones.

David sat in the back of a police SUV, holding Emily’s hand as she slept peacefully against his shoulder. Child Protective Services and a trauma counselor had already arrived, speaking gently with David and ensuring that Emily would receive all the professional care, medical attention, and emotional support she desperately needed.

"Mr. Turner," Detective Miller said, walking up to the open car door with a gentle expression. "The state attorney’s office has already filed multiple charges against Jason, including capital murder, kidnapping, and child endangerment. With the physical evidence recovered from the property and his own confession on the scene, he will never see the outside of a maximum-security prison."

David nodded slowly. "Thank you, Detective. For everything."

"Make sure that little girl gets home," Miller said softly, patting the top of the car door. "She's got a long road ahead of her, but she's got a good father."

David looked down at Emily. Her breathing was even, her face relaxed for the first time in three days. The tight, defensive posture that had defined her whenever Jason's name was mentioned was finally gone, replaced by the natural vulnerability of a ten-year-old child who knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that she was safe.

He started the engine, shifted into drive, and steered the car away from Elmwood Avenue, leaving the flashing lights, the news crews, and the house of horrors behind them.
