Chapter 5: The Little Boy Who Remembered Kindness

That Christmas Eve, someone knocked on their front door.

Standing outside was Mr. Harris...

the retired mail carrier who had found Noah beside the drainage canal.

His hair had turned almost completely white.

His smile hadn't changed at all.

"I was delivering nearby," he said.

"I thought I'd stop in."

Noah recognized him immediately.

"Mr. Harris!"

He ran across the room and wrapped both arms around the old man's waist.

Mr. Harris laughed.

"My goodness...

You're getting heavy."

Emily invited him inside.

The house filled with warm cider, homemade cookies, and old stories.

Before leaving, Mr. Harris handed Noah a tiny wrapped package.

Inside was a small brass compass.

"It helped me during forty years of delivering mail," he said.

"It always points home."

He knelt in front of Noah.

"But remember something."

He gently tapped the little boy's chest.

"The best compass isn't this one."

"It's the heart that tells you to help people who are lost."

Noah closed his fingers around the compass.

"I'll keep helping people."

Mr. Harris smiled.

"I know you will."
