Chapter 1: The Truth No One Expected

The hallway fell silent.

Every pair of eyes turned toward Noah.

His tiny fingers clung to my hand so tightly that my wedding ring dug into my skin.

The nurse knelt beside his bed.

"It's okay, sweetheart," she whispered. "Can you tell us what happened?"

Noah swallowed hard.

"Grandma locked the front door."

Diane laughed nervously.

"He's confused. He has a fever."

But Noah kept talking.

"I cried because I wanted Mommy."

His voice trembled.

"Grandma said I was ruining her lunch."

Ethan stared at his mother.

"Mom..."

Noah looked directly at him.

"She put my shoes outside."

The room froze.

"Then she told me if I wanted Mommy that badly... I should go find her."

A police officer who had quietly entered the hallway stopped writing.

"You mean she intentionally made you leave?"

Noah nodded.

"I knocked on the door."

His little shoulders shook.

"She closed the curtains."

Emily covered her mouth.

The nurse lowered her eyes.

Even the emergency physician looked stunned.

Then the officer turned toward Diane.

"Ma'am..."

Before he could finish, another nurse hurried over holding a hospital phone.

"We traced the anonymous call."

Everyone looked up.

"The caller tried to cancel treatment by claiming the child's parents refused medical care."

She looked directly at Diane.

"The number belongs to your cellphone."

Diane's face turned white.
