Chapter 2 - The Envelope OpensThe restaurant remained silent except for the distant wail of approaching police sirens.

David stood frozen, his expensive suit suddenly looking too tight around his shoulders.

Rebecca slowly lowered her wineglass.

"You've lost your mind," she snapped, trying to recover her confidence. "This is a misunderstanding."

I didn't answer.

Instead, I opened the thick manila envelope and carefully spread its contents across the white tablecloth.

Bank statements.

Property records.

Insurance policies.

Mortgage documents.

Credit reports.

Every sheet had color-coded tabs.

David frowned.

"What is this supposed to be?"

I finally looked directly at him.

"This is your entire marriage."

Confused whispers spread across the dining room.

Maya stared at the papers.

"Mom..."

I gently squeezed her trembling hand.

"It's okay, sweetheart."

Then I picked up the first document.

"You told everyone Maya couldn't manage money."

I held the paper high.

"This is the mortgage statement."

I turned it toward the crowd.

"For the last four years, every mortgage payment came from Maya's personal checking account."

David's smile disappeared.

I continued.

"You claimed you paid the bills."

Another document.

"Electricity."

Another.

"Water."

Another.

"Gas."

Another.

"Property taxes."

Every statement carried Maya's name.

Every payment came from her salary.

The restaurant manager quietly stepped closer.

Several guests leaned forward.

Rebecca's face tightened.

"That proves nothing."

"Oh, it proves quite a lot."

I pulled out another folder.

"This is David's business."

David suddenly stepped forward.

"Don't touch those."

The fear in his voice said everything.

I calmly ignored him.

"The company everyone praises..."

I placed incorporation records on the table.

"...hasn't made a profit in three years."

Gasps echoed through the room.

"The luxury SUV?"

Lease overdue.

"The Rolex?"

Purchased on Maya's credit card.

"The country club membership?"

Automatically withdrawn from Maya's account every month.

David's breathing became uneven.

"Stop talking."

"No."

I lifted one final document.

"And this..."

I paused.

"...is the loan application David submitted six months ago."

The room became perfectly still.

"He listed himself as the sole owner of Maya's inherited lake house."

Maya's eyes widened.

"What?"

I nodded slowly.

"He forged your electronic signature."

David lunged toward the papers.

"You stole private documents!"

"I didn't steal anything."

I smiled for the first time all evening.

"Maya requested copies after she quietly gave me power of attorney last week."

David's face lost every trace of color.

"You..."

"I've known much more than you realized."

Just then, two uniformed police officers entered the restaurant.

"Boston Police."

The lead officer looked around.

May you like

"We received a report of an assault."

Every eye turned toward David.
