Chapter 9 - Spring Cleaning and New Beginnings

By the time spring returned to Southern California, painting the desert hillsides in vibrant blankets of wild poppies and lupines, the Miller family had firmly turned the page to a bright new chapter.
The legal proceedings were entirely concluded. Diane was serving her sentence at the women’s correctional facility in central California, completely cut off from the family trust and facing the bitter reality of her own making. Patricia and the remaining toxic relatives had stopped attempting to reach out, realizing that Michael’s boundaries were as absolute as the concrete foundation of his home.
On a bright Saturday morning in April, Emily stood in the front yard watching a professional landscaping crew finish planting a row of bright green boxwood hedges along the perimeter of the property line.
Michael walked up behind her, sliding his hands around her waist and resting his chin gently on her shoulder.
“What do you think?” Michael asked softly. “Are the hedges tall enough?”
“They’re perfect,” Emily smiled, turning around in his arms to look up into his eyes. “Nothing gets past those hedges without an official invitation.”
“Good,” Michael murmured, leaning down to press a tender kiss to her lips. “Because I’m never letting anything threaten our peace again.”
From the backyard came the sound of Lily’s joyful laughter as she played catch with her dog—a rescue golden retriever they had adopted a month earlier, who immediately became Lily’s fiercely loyal, constant companion.
Emily looked back toward her husband, feeling a deep, unshakeable sense of completion settle into her soul.
