Chapter 10 - The Unbreakable Foundation

The sun dipped below the western horizon, painting the evening sky in brilliant strokes of amethyst, amber, and gold.
The Miller home on Hawthorne Lane glowed from within, every window warm and welcoming against the gathering dusk.
Emily sat at her desk in the home office, putting the finishing touches on a architectural landscaping project she was managing for a local community center. Her design was bold, modern, and built with deep, reinforced pillars designed to withstand any natural test.
A soft knock sounded at the office door.
Lily poked her head in, holding her favorite sketchbook and a freshly sharpened colored pencil.
“Mommy? Are you done working? Can we read my favorite book together before bedtime?” Lily asked, her eyes bright and eager.
Emily saved her digital architectural files, closed her laptop with a satisfying click, and stood up from her chair.
“I am completely done working, bug,” Emily smiled, walking over and taking her daughter’s small hand. “Let’s go.”
They walked down the hallway together, stopping briefly at the front entrance where the painted river stone guardian rock sat quietly beneath the porch light.
As Michael joined them, wrapping one arm around Emily and lifting Lily up onto his shoulders with a laughing cheer, the three of them stood together in the doorway of their home.
