Chapter 5 - The Horizon

Three months later, back in our home, the autumn sun poured golden light through the living room windows.
The legal battles with my father's company had settled quickly once Marcus presented the unedited hotel security footage to the corporate board of Vance Industries. Facing imminent shareholder revolt and financial ruin, my father had been forced into early retirement, handing over controlling shares of the company to an independent board. Mark had been fired from his executive position, and Vanessa was currently facing misdemeanor charges for child endangerment and reckless neglect.
They had tried calling, texting, and sending flying monkeys to our door. I had blocked every single number.
In the backyard, Lily was running across the lawn, chasing a red rubber ball with our new golden retriever puppy, her laughter ringing out bright and unburdened.
I stood by the kitchen window, holding a mug of coffee, watching her play.
