Chapter 4 - The Eviction

At 2:45 p.m., I stood on the wide wooden balcony outside our new hotel suite, looking down at the resort courtyard.

True to my deadline, the lobby doors pushed open.

My father emerged first, his shoulders hunched, his face flushed with humiliation as he dragged a heavy designer suitcase behind him. Behind him came my mother, dabbing angrily at her eyes with a tissue, followed by Mark, who looked like he wanted to swallow the pavement whole.

Lastly came Vanessa.

Her sunglasses were perched on top of her head, her face twisted in a mask of furious, unbridled rage. She spotted me standing on the balcony, stopped dead in her tracks, and pointed a trembling, manicured finger straight up at me.

"You ruined everything!" Vanessa shrieked across the courtyard, her voice echoing loudly enough to turn the heads of every guest lounging by the pool. "You are a selfish, bitter bitch! You destroyed our family over a stupid joke!"

A security guard stepped forward, gently but firmly guiding her toward the parking lot where their rental cars were parked.

I didn't yell back. I didn't smile. I simply leaned against the balcony railing, watching them leave with a profound, absolute sense of peace.

They had spent my entire life teaching me that I didn't matter—that my boundaries were optional, my feelings irrelevant, and my daughter's safety secondary to their convenience. They had assumed I would always be the quiet, obedient daughter who absorbed their abuse in silence.

They had miscalculated.
