Chapter 6 - The New Horizon

Three years later, the morning sun poured through the wide, arched windows of a sunlit colonial-style home in the quiet, historic neighborhood of San Jerónimo.

In the sunroom, soft laughter echoed across the polished hardwood floors.

A little girl with bright, dark curls and a quick, infectious smile was running across the rug, chasing a golden retriever puppy.

“Careful, Isabella! Don’t run too fast near the coffee table!” a warm, gentle voice called out.

Camila sat on a comfortable linen sofa, holding a warm cup of coffee, looking radiant and healthy. The physical scars of that terrible night had long since healed, replaced by the deep, unshakable peace of a woman who was finally cherished, protected, and truly loved.

Footsteps echoed down the hallway.

Alejandro walked into the sunroom, dressed in a comfortable cotton shirt and slacks, carrying a stack of architectural sketches in one hand and a small toy for Isabella in the other.

The moment Isabella saw him, she shrieked with joy, abandoning the puppy and running straight toward him.

“Daddy!” she cheered, throwing her arms around his legs.

Alejandro laughed, scooping her up into the air and kissing her cheek, his eyes glowing with a profound, unconditional paternal devotion that Mateo had never possessed in his entire life. He carried her over to the sofa, sitting down beside Camila and wrapping his free arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against his chest.

“How are the blueprints coming along, architect?” Camila asked with a soft, teasing smile, resting her head against his shoulder.

“Finished,” Alejandro murmured, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head. “The new children’s wing at the regional hospital is fully funded and approved. And best of all? We have the whole weekend ahead of us with nowhere to be.”

Camila smiled, looking out the large French doors toward the vibrant garden outside where no shadows could ever reach them again.

As for Mateo?

He was living out the remainder of his life in a small, rented apartment across town, working a low-level clerk job to pay off the mountains of debt and court-ordered restitution he owed after his real estate empire collapsed entirely under the weight of his own corruption. He had all the money and freedom he had ever wanted at Onyx, but he was entirely alone—forgotten by the world, discarded by his mistress, and erased from the lives of the only two people who had ever truly mattered.

Inside the house in San Jerónimo, the phone on the side table rang once.

Alejandro didn't even look at it. He simply let it ring, focusing entirely on the laughter of his daughter and the warm, steady hand of the woman he had loved from afar, who was now safely home for good.
