Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at dawn

By 8:00 AM, the digital evidence had been compiled into a comprehensive forensic packet, encrypted, and delivered directly to the District Attorney’s office and Detective Vance.
At the same time, Richard’s legal team filed an emergency motion for a freezing order against all assets belonging to Theresa Carden and the Carden Foundation, citing corporate fraud, perjury, and malicious prosecution.
"We aren't waiting for the police to move slowly," Richard said, sliding his suit jacket on as we stood in the grand foyer. "We are going to the Carden Foundation headquarters on Commerce Street. There is an emergency board meeting scheduled this morning to address the missing funds. Theresa expects you to be sitting in a jail cell. We are going to hand her the truth in front of every single board member."
My hands shook, but for the first time in six years, I didn't feel like running. I looked up at Richard, feeling a profound wave of gratitude and strength.
"I'm ready," I said.
An hour later, Richard’s black sedan pulled up in front of the gleaming glass-and-steel tower housing the Carden Foundation. Flashbulbs popped as we stepped out of the car; word of the overnight financial scandal had already leaked to local reporters.
We walked through the glass double doors, past the security desk, and straight up to the executive boardroom on the twelfth floor.
The heavy oak doors were closed, but we could hear Theresa’s shrill, commanding voice echoing from inside, rallying her loyal board members.
Richard didn't bother knocking. He pushed the heavy doors wide open.
The room went dead silent.
Twelve prominent Dallas philanthropists and board members sat around a massive glass conference table. At the head of the table sat Theresa Carden, dressed in an immaculate white Chanel suit, her face twisted in an expression of triumphant arrogance.
"What is the meaning of this—" Theresa started to snap, rising from her chair, but the words died in her throat when she saw me standing beside Richard.
Her face drained of all color. "You... you should be in custody!"
"Custody belongs to criminals, Theresa," Richard said smoothly, walking into the center of the room and tossing a thick binder stamped with federal and forensic seals right onto the polished glass table in front of her.
"What is this?" one of the board members demanded, picking up the binder.
"That," Richard replied, his voice ringing with absolute authority, "is a complete forensic audit proving that Theresa Carden embezzled three million dollars from her own foundation yesterday morning, framed an innocent domestic worker to cover her tracks, and orchestrated a malicious legal assault using forged electronic signatures."
Theresa lunged forward, her face mottled with rage. "Lies! Slander! Security, throw these animals out of this building!"
The boardroom doors swung open again behind us.
This time, it wasn't private security. It was Detective Vance, accompanied by two federal marshals in full tactical gear, holding a signed federal arrest warrant.
Detective Vance walked straight to the head of the table, his eyes fixed on Theresa Carden.
"Theresa Carden, you are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, perjury, and filing a false police report," Vance said clearly, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs.
As the cold metal clicked around Theresa’s wrists—the same hands that had struck my face just forty-eight hours earlier—she glared at me with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You think you’ve won?" she hissed as the marshals pulled her backward toward the door. "You’re nothing! You’ll never see a dime of that money!"
"Actually, Mrs. Carden," Richard said calmly, stepping forward to stand beside me, "as the primary trustee of the Diego and Mariana Lopez Foundation—funded by the legitimate estate of her late husband—she doesn't need your dime. She owns the building you're standing in."
