Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the Ledger

The numbers on the paper blurred together, swimming behind the wall of tears I could no longer hold back. Fourteen million, eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars. The figures mocked the six years of cold floors, hunger, and bruised wrists that my daughters and I had endured in the Carden basement.

Detective Vance stepped further into the foyer, his expression guarded but professional.

"Ms. Lopez, that account was accessed via a mobile IP address originating from a smartphone registered under your name," Detective Vance said, holding up a transparent evidence bag containing an old, cracked smartphone. "We recovered this from the storage room in the Carden estate earlier this evening during the initial execution of the search warrant."

I stared at the cracked screen in disbelief. "That phone hasn't turned on in three years! The battery died back when we were still living in our old apartment before Diego... before the accident."

Richard’s gaze shifted from the statement to the detective, his initial shock rapidly hardening into cold, surgical focus. He stepped between me and the police officers, his massive frame shielding me from their accusatory stares.

"Detective Vance," Richard said, his voice dropping into the low, commanding register that had made him a titan in the corporate healthcare sector. "Let’s look at the logistics here. Are you telling me that a woman who spent the entire morning cooking, serving forty guests, and enduring physical abuse in front of witnesses simultaneously initiated a multi-million-dollar wire transfer on a dead phone?"

Vance hesitated. "Mr. Monroe, we are simply executing the court order based on the affidavit filed by Mrs. Carden’s legal team. The electronic signature and authentication token match the device registered under Ms. Lopez’s social security number."

"An authentication token that can be generated remotely by any administrator with root access to the bank's core server," Richard countered sharply. He turned to me, his voice softening as he placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Mariana, did you ever sign up for mobile banking with Texas Interstate Bank?"

"Never," I whispered, shaking my head. "Diego handled everything. He told me banking required a minimum balance we never had. He said we didn't exist in the system."

Richard’s eyes narrowed. He looked back at Detective Vance. "I want my legal counsel brought into this immediately. Furthermore, I am retaining forensic digital investigators to analyze the IP routing of that transfer. I guarantee you, Detective, that transaction originated from an address inside the Carden corporate firewall, not from a basement storage room."

Vance studied Richard for a long moment, recognizing the weight of the man standing before him. He lowered his notebook slightly. "Mr. Monroe, technically, Ms. Lopez is named in an active financial warrant. However, given the circumstances and your corporate standing, I can delay her formal detention for twenty-four hours pending an expedited review of the server logs. But she cannot leave this property."

"She isn't going anywhere," Richard said firmly. "And neither are my legal team."
