Chapter 3: Home Again

Six months later, the mansion felt completely different.

There were toys scattered across the living room.

Tiny shoes beside the staircase.

Laughter echoed through rooms that had once been painfully quiet.

Leo had learned to crawl.

Matthew had just taken his first shaky steps while holding onto the sofa.

Rosita laughed as both boys chased after the family dog across the garden.

For the first time since my wife passed away...

the house felt alive again.

My attorney joined me on the patio.

"You made the right decision."

I watched my sons giggling in the afternoon sun.

"I almost married someone who saw them as obstacles."

He nodded.

"But you didn't."

Rosita walked over carrying both boys.

Leo wrapped his tiny arms around my neck.

Matthew reached up with a wide smile.

"Dada."

One simple word.

The sweetest sound I had heard in months.

I kissed both boys' foreheads.

Then I looked at Rosita.

"Thank you."

She smiled softly.

"I only protected them."

"No," I replied.

"You protected all of us."

Some people enter your life looking for wealth.

Others enter quietly...

and become family by choosing love over convenience every single day.

In the end, I didn't lose a fiancée.

I saved my children.

And that was worth far more than any wedding could ever have been.

The End.
