Chapter 2: Everything Falls Apart

By noon, the wedding venue had been canceled.
Guests received a simple message.
The ceremony has been permanently canceled due to personal circumstances.
The engagement ring rested inside its velvet box on my office desk.
Valeria stormed into the room escorted by security.
"You can't destroy my life over a misunderstanding!"
I looked at her calmly.
"A misunderstanding?"
"You threatened Rosita's mother's medical treatment."
"You frightened two eight-month-old babies."
"You lied to me for nearly two years."
She folded her arms.
"You'll regret humiliating me."
I shook my head.
"No."
"I regret ignoring the warning signs."
Security escorted her from the estate.
As the gates closed behind her, she looked back one final time.
Not at me.
At the mansion.
At the life she had just lost.
Inside, I signed several documents.
One transferred Rosita from temporary housekeeper to full-time caregiver and household manager.
Another established a medical trust that permanently covered her mother's dialysis treatments.
Rosita stared at the papers through tears.
"You don't owe me this."
I smiled gently.
May you like
"No."
"But my sons do."
