Chapter 6 - The Eviction

The clock on the mantelpiece chimed 10:30 p.m.
The glowing embers in the fireplace cast long, flickering shadows across the six-foot canvas towering above the hearth. Daniel and Victoria stood near the entryway, surrounded by several large designer suitcases that Harrison’s junior associates had aggressively packed and dragged down from the master suite.
Victoria was shaking with rage, her mascara running down her cheeks, her expensive silk dress wrinkled and ruined.
“You can’t do this, Arthur! You’ll ruin us! You’ll destroy the Vance family name!” Victoria screamed, her voice echoing shrilly through the grand foyer.
“The Vance family name was destroyed the moment you walked through these doors five years ago, Victoria,” Arthur replied coldly, standing tall beside Elena near the living room archway. “You have twenty-four hours to vacate the Miami condo as well. My legal team has already initiated foreclosure proceedings on the property.”
Daniel stared directly at Elena, his eyes wide with a desperate, pleading agony. “Elena... please. Please talk to them. We were married for seven years. Don't throw it all away over... over a mistake.”
Elena looked at her husband—the man who had spent years treating her like an ATM, hiding behind a mask of corporate ambition while betraying her with his stepmother. Her face remained completely serene.
“The only mistake I made, Daniel, was staying in Boston,” Elena said quietly, her voice carrying an absolute, unshakeable certainty. “You thought I was weak. You thought I was too dependent, too ashamed, and too tied to your family to fight back. But you forgot one fundamental rule of architecture.”
She stepped forward, her eyes locking onto his with razor-sharp clarity.
“When the foundation is rotten,” Elena whispered, “you don't try to patch the cracks. You demolish the entire structure and build something better on top of the ruins.”
Without another word, Elena turned her back on them, walking back toward the warm, glowing living room.
Two federal marshals, accompanied by Harrison’s private security detail, stepped forward, grabbing Daniel and Victoria by their arms and escorting them out the heavy oak front door.
The door swung shut.
