Chapter 4 - The Canvas Falls

The heavy black velvet drape slid off the wooden frame with a soft, whispering hiss, collapsing in a heap onto the Persian rug.

The room seemed to stop breathing.

Towering six feet tall above the stone fireplace was the high-definition photograph. Every detail was magnified to an agonizing, inescapable degree: Daniel lying shirtless beneath the custom Egyptian cotton sheets, his head resting against Victoria’s bare chest, and Victoria staring directly out of the frame with that small, triumphant, predatory smile.

Arthur Vance stared up at the canvas.

For ten agonizing seconds, the old man didn't move a muscle. His weathered face went completely rigid, the blood draining from his cheeks until his skin matched the silver of his hair. He gripped the handle of his cane so tightly his knuckles turned translucent.

Then, Arthur slowly turned his head.

His eyes swept past Daniel—who had collapsed backward onto the edge of the sofa, burying his face in his hands—and locked onto Victoria, who was now backing away toward the foyer with a look of pure, unadulterated panic.

“Arthur... darling... please, let me explain,” Victoria stammered, her voice shaking violently as she raised her manicured hands in a pathetic gesture of defense. “It’s... it’s a deepfake! It’s artificial intelligence! Elena generated it to destroy our family because she’s unstable—she’s always been jealous of our close relationship!”

“Shut your mouth, Victoria,” Arthur whispered.

It wasn't a shout. It was a terrifying, low growl that carried the weight of a thunderclap inside the quiet room.

Arthur turned back to look at the massive photograph, his chest heaving with slow, heavy breaths. He looked at the background details—the exact brass headboard of the guest suite upstairs, the monogrammed silk pillowcases he had gifted them for their fifth wedding anniversary, the specific watch on Daniel’s wrist.

“That’s not artificial intelligence,” Arthur said, his voice trembling with a cold, simmering rage that made Daniel flinch. “That is my guest room. Those are my wedding gifts. And that... is the ultimate betrayal.”

Arthur slowly turned his head to look at Daniel, who sat shivering on the sofa like a whipped dog.

“For ten years, Daniel, after your mother passed away, I tried to rebuild this family,” Arthur said, his voice cracking slightly with profound grief and disgust. “I welcomed Victoria into my home. I trusted you to take over the firm. I thought you were building a legacy with Elena—a brilliant, devoted woman who gave up her own career in Chicago just to care for us when my heart started failing.”

Arthur paused, his chest tightening as he gripped his cane.

“And all this time... you two were sleeping together behind my back? Using her money? Treating her like an ATM?” Arthur’s voice rose sharply. “Look at me, Daniel! Look at your father!”

Daniel slowly lowered his hands, his face stained with tears of humiliation and panic. “Dad... I can explain. It got out of hand—Victoria manipulated me—she—”

“Don’t you dare blame her!” Victoria shrieked, her sophisticated mask finally shattering completely into hysterical fury as she lunged toward Daniel. “You were just as eager! You hated being dominated by a successful wife! You told me every single day how much you resented Elena!”

“Enough!” Arthur slammed his cane against the floor again.

He turned away from them, walking slowly toward Elena, who stood by the fireplace with absolute, unyielding composure. The old man stopped in front of her, his eyes shining with unshed tears. He reached out, taking Elena’s soft hands in his weathered, trembling palms.

“I am so sorry, Elena,” Arthur whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “I brought these vipers into your life. I demanded you stay in Boston. I robbed you of your career in Chicago. And this is how you were repaid.”

“You didn't know, Arthur,” Elena said gently, her voice softening just a fraction as she looked down at the old man. “None of us knew the full extent of it. But tonight... everything changes.”
