Chapter 10 - The Light That Saved Us
Later that evening, Marcus and I walked out onto the back terrace of our house.
The sky above was a canvas of deep violet and orange, the stars just beginning to peek through the evening dusk. Below us, the city lights twinkled like a vast ocean of diamonds.
Marcus wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin gently on my shoulder as we looked out over the estate.
"I keep thinking about that day," Marcus admitted quietly, his voice catching slightly. "About what would have happened if I had arrived two minutes later. Or if that camera hadn't been installed."
I turned in his arms, placing my hands on his chest, feeling the steady, reassuring beat of his heart.
"You came through the door because you loved us," I said gently. "And the camera was just a tool. It revealed the truth, but it was your love that protected me. You believed me, Marcus. You didn't let her manipulate you."
"I almost listened to her for a second," he murmured, regret lacing his words. "When she said you fell..."
"But you looked at the evidence," I reminded him softly. "You looked at her heel. You looked at my pain. You chose to fight for us."
Marcus smiled, a genuine, beautiful warmth returning to his face. He leaned down and pressed his lips to mine—a slow, tender kiss that carried all the relief of surviving a storm and finding safe harbor on the other side.
When he pulled back, he looked toward the small status light of our home security system blinking softly on the terrace wall—a tiny blue light signaling that our home was secure, peaceful, and protected.

"Some lights exist to expose the darkness," Marcus whispered, holding me close against his chest. "And some exist to guide us home."
I rested my head against his shoulder, closing my eyes, listening to the soft rustle of the leaves in the night breeze and the gentle sound of our baby sleeping peacefully inside. The shadows of the past were gone, burned away by the light of truth, leaving behind a family that was unbroken, unshakeable, and finally whole.
