Chapter 4 - First Class Ambitions

Three thousand feet above the Atlantic Ocean, flight LH402 glided smoothly through a vast sea of white clouds, cutting a precise line toward the tropical paradise of the Maldives.

In seat 1A of the first-class cabin, Ethan Cole swirled a glass of vintage Dom Pérignon, watching the tiny bubbles rise toward the crystal rim with a sense of intoxicating triumph.

"To new beginnings," Ethan said, clinking his glass against Vanessa’s.

Vanessa beamed, her diamond-encrusted engagement ring—purchased with funds diverted from the Boston hotel renovation account—sparkling under the soft reading lights of the private cabin. She took a slow sip of champagne, leaning her head against Ethan’s tailored blazer.

"I still can't believe she signed without a fight," Vanessa purred, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "I honestly thought she’d throw a tantrum, demand half the Manhattan penthouse, or try to drag out the divorce for months just to spite you."

Ethan let out a self-satisfied chuckle, stretching his long legs out across the spacious legroom of the first-class suite.

"Grace doesn't have the stomach for a fight," Ethan said dismissively, waving a hand toward the cabin ceiling. "She’s a creature of routine, Vanessa. She likes stability, quiet mornings, and safe investments. She spent eleven years hiding behind my success, acting like she was indispensable. The second I put those papers in front of her and showed her I was cutting her loose, she realized she was completely out of her depth."

"Well, her loss is certainly my gain," Vanessa laughed, resting her hand on his chest. "By the time we land in Malé, our overwater bungalow will be waiting, our offshore accounts will be fully funded, and we won't ever have to look at her boring, judgmental face again."

"Exactly," Ethan agreed, taking a long drink of champagne. "Cole-Bennett is entirely mine now. No nagging compliance warnings, no conservative risk reports telling me what I can and can't invest in. From here on out, it’s unbridled expansion."

He looked out the reinforced cabin window, watching the endless expanse of ocean below. For Ethan, life was a series of transactions—a game where the boldest player always won, and rules were merely suggestions meant for people without vision. He felt invincible. Untouchable. A king surveying his domain from the clouds.

What Ethan didn't know—what his arrogant, self-absorbed mind was completely incapable of processing—was that the entire foundation of his kingdom had rested entirely on the shoulders of the woman he had just so casually discarded.

An hour passed in quiet luxury.

A flight attendant with a pristine uniform and a polite smile approached their suite, holding a silver tray with a complimentary fruit platter.

"Mr. Cole?" the attendant asked smoothly.

"Yes?" Ethan replied without looking up from his tablet, where he was browsing luxury yacht listings in the Indian Ocean.

"We've received a priority satellite communication routed through the airline's executive desk for you. The purser asked me to deliver it directly."

Ethan frowned, glancing up. "A satellite message? For me? Nobody on this flight knows my itinerary except my executive assistant."

"It appears to be an urgent corporate notification, sir," the attendant said, handing over a sealed white envelope bearing the logo of the Manhattan Port Authority and the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Vanessa sat up straight, her smile faltering slightly. "What is that?"

"Probably just a routine tax clearance from the accounting department," Ethan muttered, tearing open the heavy envelope. "Grace’s former firm always loves to send redundant paperwork."

He pulled out a single sheet of heavy bond paper covered in official legal letterhead.

As his eyes scanned the first two lines, the color drained completely from Ethan’s face. The smug, triumphant smirk froze on his lips, turning into a mask of absolute, paralyzing horror.

NOTICE OF FEDERAL ASSET FREEZE AND CORPORATE RECEIVERSHIP. TO: Ethan Cole, Managing Director, Cole-Bennett Hospitality Group. FROM: Office of the United States Attorney, SDNY.

Ethan stared at the words, his brain refusing to process the syntax.

“...Pursuant to the withdrawal of primary institutional risk guarantees and the filing of certified forensic audits indicating unauthorized capital diversion, tax evasion, and corporate fraud totaling $14.2 million...”

"Ethan?" Vanessa asked, her voice trembling as she noticed the sudden change in his demeanor. "What is that? Why do you look like you've seen a ghost?"

Ethan didn't answer. His hands began to shake violently, the expensive glass of champagne slipping from his fingers and shattering across the carpeted cabin floor, sending golden liquid spraying over his Italian leather shoes.

“...Federal receivers have been dispatched to secure all corporate headquarters, bank accounts, and subsidiary holdings effective immediately. All international accounts tied to Meridian Holdings LLC have been frozen pending criminal investigation...”

He dropped the paper, his chest heaving as a cold wave of panic crashed over him.

The company.

The hotels.

The offshore accounts.

The millions of dollars in liquid capital he planned to use to fund his new life in the Maldives.

Gone. All of it frozen, seized by the federal government under allegations of corporate fraud that he had unknowingly committed by bypassing compliance signatures he didn't even understand.

"Turn the plane around," Ethan gasped, grabbing the lapel of the nearest flight attendant as she walked past. "You have to land this plane. Right now. I need to make a call!"

The flight attendant stepped back, her expression turning cool and professional.

"I'm sorry, sir, but federal airspace regulations prohibit unscheduled mid-flight turnarounds unless authorized by air traffic control," she said firmly. "Furthermore, we’ve just received an automated alert from our ground operations center indicating that your corporate credit accounts and digital ticketing privileges have been suspended by financial institutions due to an active federal asset freeze."

Ethan stared at her in utter disbelief.

Beside him, Vanessa went completely pale, her designer purse slipping from her lap onto the floor.

"Suspended?" Ethan choked out, his voice rising in panic. "That’s impossible! Do you know who I am? I am the CEO of Cole-Bennett!"

"Not anymore, Mr. Cole," a cool, synthesized voice seemed to echo in his head.

As the realization finally crashed down upon him with the force of a tidal wave, Ethan buried his face in his trembling hands.

May you like

He hadn't just divorced his wife.

He had just fired his shield, surrendered his defense, and walked straight into a federal cage of his own making.
