Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Moretti

Within forty-eight hours, the underworld of Chicago experienced a seismic collapse that made national headlines.
Federal indictments landed with the force of a meteorological strike. Operating under the comprehensive financial disclosures and corporate forensic audits provided by Amara’s legal team, federal prosecutors charged Dante Moretti with racketeering, conspiracy, money laundering, and treason against his own syndicate organizations. Simultaneously, the internal betrayal engineered by Dante’s alignment with the Doyles triggered a brutal, swift civil war among the remaining factions, utterly crippling both syndicates before local law enforcement even had to intervene.
Dante Moretti, the man who had ruled the city from behind mahogany desks and velvet curtains, found himself locked inside a maximum-security federal holding facility awaiting trial, denied bail due to insurmountable flight-risk evidence.
Across town, far away from the dark, echoing halls of the lakefront mansion, the sun poured brightly through the windows of a sunlit, high-ceilinged legal office overlooking Lake Michigan.
Amara sat at a polished oak conference table, signing the final paperwork finalizing her absolute, unbundled divorce and the complete restructuring of Moretti Logistics’ legitimate assets into a newly formed, independent philanthropic and real estate holding firm—Aegis Enterprises—registered entirely in her own name and held in a secure trust for her unborn daughter.
Thomas Sterling stamped the final document with a satisfying thud.
“It’s done, Mrs. Moretti,” Sterling said, offering her a warm, genuine smile. “Every corporate account has been unfrozen and transferred. The residential properties—including the lakefront mansion—have been liquidated or reassigned. You are, by all legal definitions, the sole owner and majority shareholder of a clean, multi-million-dollar estate.”
Amara set her pen down. She looked at the signature on the paper—Amara Moretti crossed out and replaced cleanly by her maiden name, Amara Vance.
“Thank you, Mr. Sterling,” she said, her voice steady and light.
“If you don't mind me asking,” Sterling said hesitatingly as he packed his briefcase, “what are your plans now? You could live anywhere in the world. Paris, London, the Swiss Alps...”

Amara placed her hand over her belly. The baby gave a soft, reassuring kick, as if agreeing with the thought.
“I’m not going anywhere,” Amara said, looking out the window at the magnificent, glittering expanse of Lake Michigan. “This is my city. I built the foundation of that empire with my own hands. I’m just going to build something better on top of it.”
