Chapter 4 - The Sound of Breaking Glass

Back at the lakefront mansion, Dante Moretti was having a very bad morning.

It started at 8:05 a.m., when his chief financial officer called to report that every single corporate debit card, operating line of credit, and payroll account tied to Moretti Logistics had been instantly frozen by a federal circuit court judge on grounds of emergency marital asset preservation.

By 9:00 a.m., two senior syndicate capos—men who had bled for Dante on the docks—were standing in his private study demanding to know why the weekly cash payouts to their crews had bounced.

And by 10:30 a.m., Dante was standing in the empty, silent master bedroom of his mansion, staring at Amara’s neatly cleared closet, realizing with a cold, sickening shock in his gut that she hadn't gone to throw a tantrum at her sister's house.

She had gone to war.

“Boss,” Sal, his hulking, scarred head of security, muttered as he stepped into the bedroom. “We checked the downtown loft her friend owns. She’s not there. But we found something else.”

Sal held out a thick manila envelope.

Dante snatched it from his hand, ripping the flap open. Inside were three high-resolution photographs taken at the private airfield two weeks ago—clear, unmistakable images of him stepping out of his Escalade, laughing with Selena Ward, and pulling her close outside the black sedan.

Attached to the photos was a single sheet of heavy legal bond paper bearing the letterhead of Sterling & Vance, Family Law & Asset Protection, along with a handwritten note in Amara’s immaculate, precise cursive script:

Dante,

You told me to accept your life or leave. I chose the latter. As for the rest—consider it a hostile takeover.

— Amara

Dante’s face drained of all color. The veins in his temples throbbed violently. He didn't just feel anger; for the first time in his ruthless, calculated life, a cold spike of absolute panic pierced his chest.

It wasn't just about the money, though freezing his liquid assets had effectively paralyzed his empire. It was the documents. If Amara’s lawyers had subpoenaed his corporate records, they would inevitably uncover Vanguard Holdings. They would find the wire transfers to Selena. And if the Moretti capos—men like Sal, who despised the Doyles with every breath in their bodies—found out that their supreme leader was sleeping with a Doyle spy and leaking syndicate routes to their sworn enemies...

“Get the car,” Dante whispered, his voice shaking with suppressed rage. “Find her. Find her now.”

“Boss,” Sal said cautiously, shifting his weight from foot to foot. “There’s... there’s more. A package was delivered to the Onyx Room club downtown about twenty minutes ago. Addressed directly to the capos.”

Dante stopped breathing. “What was in it?”

“Copies of the Vanguard wire transfers,” Sal said grimly. “And a typed memo detailing every shipping route compromised to the Doyles over the last eighteen months. The boys are reading it right now, Dante. And they’re not asking questions anymore.”

The sound of shattering glass echoed through the bedroom as Dante swept a crystal decanter off the mahogany dresser, sending amber liquor and shards of crystal flying across the floor.

He had thought Amara was a fragile, dependent ornament he could push around at will. He was about to learn that she was the architect of his total destruction.
