Chapter 4 – Home Again

One year later...

Spring sunlight spilled across the gardens my mother had planted decades earlier.

The roses were blooming again.

So was I.

The mansion felt different.

Not because the furniture had changed.

Because peace had returned.

I transformed one wing of the estate into the Margaret Cole Foundation, providing legal assistance and emergency housing for spouses escaping financial abuse and coercive relationships.

Every woman who walked through those doors reminded me of one lesson my mother had spent her life teaching.

Never mistake dependence for love.

One afternoon, I walked into my mother's old study.

Her favorite chair still faced the window overlooking the ocean.

On the desk sat a framed photograph of us laughing together years before illness entered our lives.

I gently touched the frame.

"You were still protecting me," I whispered.

"Even after you were gone."

Outside, children laughed during a charity garden event hosted on the estate.

Their voices drifted through the open windows.

For months after Ryan's arrest, I had wondered if this house would always remind me of betrayal.

Instead...

It reminded me of resilience.

Because houses are built with stone.

Homes are built with truth.

As the sun began to set over the Pacific, golden light filled every room my mother had loved.

For the first time since losing her, I didn't feel alone.

I felt guided.

I smiled softly toward the gardens she had created.

"Thank you, Mom."

The wind stirred the roses gently, carrying their fragrance through the open window.

And in that quiet moment, I finally understood her last gift.

She hadn't simply left me an inheritance.

May you like

She had left me the strength to protect it—and myself.

The End.
