Chapter 5 - The Legal Noose

The heavy oak door pushed open wider, and David Brenner stepped into the master suite, flanked not by mourning relatives, but by two uniformed federal marshals and a local precinct detective carrying a thick stack of legal documents.
Grant flinched as the cold steel handcuffs materialized in the detective's hands.
"Grant Whitmore and Tessa Lane," the detective announced, his voice flat and professional as he pulled out his badge. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, grand larceny, wire fraud, and illegal tampering with regulated medical treatments. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
"No—wait! This is a mistake! You can't do this!" Grant shouted, lunging forward before the two marshals stepped seamlessly into his path, their broad shoulders blocking his exit and forcing his hands behind his back.
"We can do this, Mr. Whitmore, and we've been doing it since two o'clock this afternoon when the federal grandermis indictment was signed," David Brenner said calmly, adjusting his glasses as he looked down at the paperwork in his hands. "Furthermore, all power of attorney documents you forced or forged over the last six months have been legally declared null and void by the state probate court."
Tessa was sobbing openly now, her expensive cream silk dress crumpled as she slumped against the foot of the bed while the female officer cuffed her wrists with clinical efficiency. "Grant! Do something! Call your lawyers!"
"His lawyers can't help him, Tessa," I said, walking slowly over to the window and looking out at the manicured lawns bathed in moonlight. "Every asset you two tried to steal has already been frozen, seized, and transferred back into the Bennett Family Foundation. As of five minutes ago, you are both legally, financially, and socially bankrupt."
Grant struggled against the marshals, his face turning a furious, blotchy red. "You planned this! From the very beginning! You let me go through the funeral! You humiliated me!"
I turned around slowly, my gaze meeting his with absolute, freezing detachment.
"I gave you exactly what you wanted, Grant," I said quietly. "You wanted me buried. You wanted to stand over my open casket and smile with your mistress while you planned to steal my life. So I let you act out your little play right to the final curtain. The only mistake you made... was forgetting that I wrote the script."
With a final, desperate wrench, Grant was hauled out of the bedroom, his furious curses echoing down the grand hallway until the heavy front door slammed shut below.

Tessa was escorted out moments later, head bowed, her designer heels clicking a miserable, defeated rhythm against the hardwood floor.
Within five minutes, the master suite was completely empty, save for David Brenner, Jenna, and me.
