Chapter 4 - The Anatomy of a Betrayal

Grant looked like he had just seen a corpse crawl out of a sepulchre. His mouth opened and closed twice, but no sound came out—only a ragged, terrified rasp of air.

"C-Claire?" he finally choked out, his hands trembling violently as he reached out toward me as if trying to ward off a phantom. "You're... you're dead. We had the funeral. We put you in the ground!"

"You put a heavy mahogany box filled with fifty pounds of lead weights and medical textbook dummies in the ground, Grant," I corrected calmly, stepping further into the room while keeping a safe, calculated distance. "Though I have to admit, the floral arrangements were exquisite. Excellent taste on Jenna's part."

Tessa was shaking so hard she had to grab the bedpost to keep from collapsing. Her cream silk dress, once a symbol of her triumphant cruelty, now looked like a shroud of utter panic. "You... you faked your death? How? That's illegal! That's—"

"Fraud?" I supplied helpfully, raising an eyebrow. "Conspiracy? Embezzlement? Oh, trust me, Tessa, I know all about illegal activities. Especially the ones you and my loving husband spent the last eight months orchestrating behind my back."

I pulled a thin, leather-bound tablet from beneath my arm and tossed it onto the center of the bed, right between them.

"Page forty-two details the unauthorized wire transfers from my personal trust accounts into the Cayman Islands shell company you registered under the fake name 'Apex Medical Solutions'," I said, my voice cutting through the silent room like a scalpel. "Page eighty-nine contains the signed prescription logs from St. Jude’s Hospital, showing how my wonderful nurse here systematically swapped out my prescribed immunotherapy boosters with harmless saline placebos to accelerate my physical decline."

Grant’s head snapped toward Tessa, his eyes wide with sudden, frantic betrayal. "You did what?"

"I didn't—she's lying!" Tessa screeched, her voice cracking with hysteria. "She's making it all up! Grant, don't listen to her!"

"It's all right, Tessa, you don't have to lie anymore," I said smoothly, tapping a button on my tablet.

Instantly, the bedroom speakers began playing an audio recording of a phone call dated three weeks ago:

(“Look, if the immunotherapy actually works, our timeline falls apart,” Tessa’s recorded voice whispered clearly through the room. “We need her out of the way before the annual board review, or the inheritance lawyers lock up the trust for good.”) (“Just make sure the placebo swap is untraceable,” Grant’s recorded voice replied smoothly. “Once she's gone, nobody's going to audit a cancer patient's medical records.”)

The audio cut off.

The silence that followed was so heavy it felt physical.

Grant slowly turned his head back toward me, the fragile mask of his charming, successful-businessman persona completely shattered, revealing the desperate, cornered rat beneath. "Claire... please. Let's talk about this. We were married for eleven years. I loved you—"

May you like

"Don't," I snapped, the ice in my voice stopping him dead in his tracks. "Do not ever use that word in this house. You didn't love me, Grant. You loved my portfolio. You loved the social standing my family name provided. And the moment you thought I was too broken to fight back, you tried to murder me slowly and quietly from the inside out."

I turned toward the hallway door. "You can come in now, David."
