Chapter 8 - The Plea and the Judgment

The courtroom of the Cook County Criminal Courthouse was packed to the gills when Daniel’s plea hearing was called in early December.
Flashbulbs popped outside the double doors as reporters vied for position, eager to cover the dramatic downfall of the Mercer Development executive. Inside, the atmosphere was sterile and tense.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Arthur and Linda. We presented a united front of absolute, unshakable strength.
Across the aisle, seated at the defense table, sat Daniel.
He looked unrecognizable. Gone was the arrogant, polished corporate golden boy in tailored designer suits. He wore an orange jumpsuit, his hair unwashed and messy, his shoulders slumped in total defeat. He looked ten years older, the reality of federal penitentiary time crushing whatever spirit he had left.
When Judge Katherine Sterling entered the courtroom, everyone rose.
"We are here today for the matter of State of Illinois versus Daniel Mercer," Judge Sterling announced, adjusting her glasses as she scanned the case file. "The court has received a formal plea agreement negotiated between the prosecution and the defense."
She looked directly down at Daniel.
"Mr. Mercer, you have entered a plea of guilty to all counts: grand larceny, wire fraud, identity theft, and mortgage forgery. Do you understand that by entering this plea, you waive your right to a trial?"
Daniel swallowed hard, his voice cracking slightly as he spoke into the microphone. "Yes, Your Honor."
"In exchange for your cooperation and the forfeiture of all remaining personal assets," Judge Sterling continued, "the state recommends a sentence of eight years in a federal correctional facility, with mandatory restitution of one hundred eighty-four thousand dollars to Mercer Development."
Eight years.
Daniel bowed his head, his hands clenching into tight fists on the defense table. He didn't look back at the gallery. He didn't look for sympathy, because there was none left to give.
Judge Sterling struck her gavel once with finality.

"Sentencing is finalized. Take the defendant into custody."
Two bailiffs stepped forward, snapped handcuffs onto Daniel’s wrists, and led him away through the side door without a single word spoken. The chapter was closed. The parasite had been removed from the system.
